What does +++ leu mean?

Hi,

I had urine and blood pressure checked today then had a consultant appointment straight after.

My bp was 140/89 which he said is slightly high but not overly high. Also, looking at my notes, he’s wrote +++ leu. What does this mean? He also asked me if I’ve had any burning when peeing which I haven’t. He didn’t elaborate when I said I hadn’t, i’m just a bit confused Confused

Thanks everyone! :)

It means they found leukocytes/white blood cells in your urine, so possibly a UTI.

3 positives for leukocyte. It's an infection marker. Did they say they would send the sample off to see if there was an infection? The scale is 0 to 4 positive

I think it means you may have a water infection.

Thank you for your reply! Smile Nothing was said about that, he just asked me not once, but twice, if it hurt when I went to pee? Which it doesn’t atm, so I said no and then nothing else was said on the subject, he just went on to something else. Do you think they’ll still send it off anyway? He said he wanted to see me 2 weeks after my 20 week scan though but that’s around 4 weeks off!

Where I work they would send it off automatically but usually they would let you know. If you unsure ask your gp so have a sample for them to send. Just phone and say you had 3+ and would like it testing. They may even be able to see if the hospital have sent it off and the results. Tho this usually is 48 hours to see what culture grow and what antibiotics to use.

I'm a midwife and routinely send off samples for leukocytes, even if asymptomatic. UTIs are more common in pregnancy and can easily go unnoticed. If left untreated they can sometimes cause uterine irritability, which will give you nasty stomach cramps ~ nothing a simple course of antibiotics couldn't treat though. I would drop a sample into the GP just in case he didn't send it offSmile

I had ++ leukocytes when I had thrush. Could be that or a UTI.
