Platelet count under 50

My daughter is 36 weeks pregnant and has been told that her platelet count is now under 50. She has had a low platelet count throughout pregnancy but the level is now reducing regularly. Is this something to worry about? At various times during pregnancy, my daughter has had problems with protein in her urine, raised blood pressure, small baby and Braxton Hicks pains. She was admitted to hospital for 2 days, a couple of weeks ago, when an induction was considered. She is now being monitored every 2/3 days. She was told last week, that it was not thought that she was suffering from Pre-eclampsia. She sees the consultant again on Thursday, when she will have another scan to check the growth of the baby.

Thanks very much cbcb, I really appreciate your comments.

My daughter was moved to a smaller and quieter side ward last night, because her bp was so high all day. Yesterday afternoon, the Dr explained all about Induction to her, and said staff would make a decision on her case today. It looks as if the baby will be delivered this week - fingers crossed!

Oops, repeat! My message, written last night, did not display today so I decided to write another one. Of course, the first message has now been added - sorry.

Strawberryfair - what's the news about your daughter? Is she is still in hospital?

Strawberryfair · 03/12/2007 09:29

My daughter was discharged from hospital on Monday 26 November and was admitted again, for a day, mid week. On Saturday morning, she was visited at home, by the midwife, and sent straight back to hospital. Her blood pressure is now 144/103 and her urine protein level, +3. As her blood pressure was only 95/70 in early pregnancy, there is some concern. She was started on blood pressure tablets yesterday morning! Last week, the doctors told my daughter they have decided against induction for the time being - they said they felt the process probably would not work for her and could lead to her needing a Caesarian. The last I heard, they wanted to wait and see if she could give birth naturally. I don't know whether the developements of the weekend will make any difference, but the doctor should be making a decision about her case this morning. I think my daughter has finally realised that she is ill and needs to be in hospital - she is feeling rather unwell now.

We saw the consultant today and my daughter is to be booked in for Induction over the next couple of days. Amazingly, she is 1 cm dilated, so we should have a baby very soon now.

Induction process started yesterday afternoon. Blood pressure and urine protein levels very high, so second stage was not completed last night. Hopefully, the blood pressure will be lower today, so they can continue with the induction, otherwise my daughter may have to have a Caesarean section. Fingers crossed, that is not necessary!

It's a boy!! The long, traumatic birth, finished with a mad dash to theatre, but Mum and baby are now progressing well. Many thanks everyone for your advice and good wishes. I am a very happy and relieved Granny.

I'm 29 weeks pregnant and have a low platelet count. It's suddenly dropped to 51, not sure how serious this is. Only the midwide mentioned injections of somekind or a blood transfusion. Has anyone else had the same experience. Thanks
