Pregnancy

My waters have gone at 30 weeks

I'm currently on the labour ward, unable to sleep and worried. I've had a normal, easy pregnancy then today out of nowhere my waters broke, I'm 30+2. I'm being kept in for monitoring for now. Can anyone share any experience of this?

Sending hugs. I spent 9 weeks in hospital before ds1 was born at 34 weeks. That was 25 years ago and he is absolutely fine

With both of my dc who were early my waters broke (34,31) and they were both born exactly a week later.

Thanks so much everyone ❤️ I feel completely overwhelmed still. I've been transferred to another hospital about an hour from where I live as it's better for baby here if it's born. Annoyingly I live 5 mins from my local one! But on the bright side I've got from a dark, tiny, middle bay to a bright airy window bay snd feel much better for being here. Still no signs of labour but my waters have continued to leak. I'm just hoping I can keep baby in there another week or so but I feel quite confident and calm that I'm in the right place. I'll keep you updated! Thanks again for all your support

Great news about the better bed! Best of luck. You're past 24hrs now so you're beating the odds with every minute! x

Excellent news on the bed upgrade, you really are in the best place.

Sending love and best wishes x

That's great you got through the first 24 hours, think that's the highest risk for going into labour early. Glad you have a window now and glad you are in a better hospital for prem babies.

Best wishes OP.

I’ve had a 32 weeker and a 33 weeker. When my waters went, DD (32weeks) was born within 12 hours. DS (33weeks) was born within 7 hours. Both stayed on the neonatal unit until just under 37 weeks.

With DD, waters went completely unexpectedly. Such a shock. With DS, I was in hospital from 28 weeks due to tightenings. I was transferred to Portsmouth, who were confident when looking after very premature babies (

Just to add to the positive stories one of my friends' waters broke around 30/31 weeks. Baby was in hospital for about six weeks I think. He's now a perfectly healthy, happy 12 year old 🙂

My waters went at 29 weeks with DC1. I was given steroids and told to expect delivery within 72 hours, but he was very comfortable where he was and stayed put until I was induced at 34 weeks. I was told that at that point the risks of prematurity were outweighed by the risks of infection. He was quite small for a 34 weeker and had a couple of weeks in neonatal care but soon caught up.
All the best OP.

I have had 2 PPROM babies. DD born at 35+2, 24 hours after waters went. DS2 was born at 33+4 but waters went at 31+5. So he was a bit more of a worry and I remember my 2 day hospital stay when waters broke well. Both were very fast labours... Nothing immediate after waters went but once noticeable contractions did start I had a baby in under an hour! Luckily I was already in hospital both times.

Hope your baby stays in longer but prospects are very good at this gestation if that's not the case.

Are you planning to breastfeed? Do PM me if you want experience of trying to get BFing established in preemies.

This happened to me in my first pregnancy although I was further along than you. I had very mild contractions from about 24 hours after my waters broke, and they gradually ramped up and my DC was born after about 50 hours.

I would advise an eye mask and ear plugs as others have suggested, but the very best thing I did was to start listening to my hypnobirthing tracks (which I had not got around to doing before my waters broke), it was the only thing that sent me to sleep in hospital and really helped when it came to the actual labour.

If you are planning on breastfeeding then start reading up on it now as breastfeeding a premature baby comes with extra challenges.

Good luck, a friend of mine has a 30 weeker and she is a smart, happy & healthy 7 year old now.

My waters went at 23+4 - I was already in labour, and the babies had both arrived within half an hour of the first set of waters going (second one went after my boy was born and literally gushed all over one of the doctors 🤭) 5 months in hospital, which don't get me wrong we're the worst 5 months of my life but my babies are now 14 months old and you would never know they were prem- doctors and nurses on NICUs are literally miracle workers- rest assured that if your baba does come early they will be in the best hands- lots of luck and hope xx

Just woke up after a much better night sleep and there was some blood when I wiped when I went to the loo... having a bit of a "is this it?!" moment but trying to listen to some hypnobirthing tracks and get some more kip incase today is bigger than I imagined! I was thinking I might be discharged last night if nothing started 😬

Have you told the mw? I didn't think to although I was also in with early waters breaking. I got v told off.

Oh you are being very brave. Whatever happens next, you are in good hands and you will do fine. Hopefully you'll have some more time to anticipate meeting this little one 🤞

I meant to say my friend had her ds at 30 weeks about 5 months ago. He was little so spent some time in nicu but came home at about 8 weeks old (38 weeks) and is doing amazingly now!

yellowgecko · 08/06/2021 06:32

Sending hugs - mine was born at 30 weeks exactly, 6 hours after PPROM. I never knew why, 'one of those things'.
We had 10 week stay on NICU, and only managed 1 dose of steroids.

He's now 5, you'd never know.

Take it an hour at a time, things can change so quickly.

Hope your waters stay in place, and keep taking, it really helps Thanks

NotMaryWhitehouse · 08/06/2021 06:36

My son was born at 30 weeks, also from PPROM, never had any contractions at all, although the nurses could see them on the monitors, slightly!

He's amazing, totally fine. It was bloody terrifying for us though. SCBU/NICU are incredible and you will be very well looked after.

Take it easy on yourself. Nothing you could have done differently, just one of those (crazy!) things.

I had my babies at 33 and 36 weeks but due to different circumstances however there is a Facebook group called parents of preemies uk.
They are brilliant, there are loads of parents on there who have pprom'd and have happy healthy children.
I'd suggest you join as having a premature baby is quite a different journey than you'd expect and this group can provide a lot of support.
Wishing you and baby the best of luck and remember every day and every hour they stay put is a blessing. And 30 weeks is fantastic

Former ultra early baby here (25 weeks) wishing you all the best OP.
On the practical front, can you get some Bluetooth headband headphones for hospital sleep and rest? They were recommended in the last Swears By.
