No reassurance scans?

I'm 11 weeks pregnant (confirmed with a private ultrasound at 8 weeks). At lunchtime today I got brown spotting, which progressed into bright red spotting. I called the out of hours gp and eventually got referred to A&E. At A&E I was told they don't scan on the evening and weekends, and that I'd have to wait 10 days for a reassurance scan due to a backlog in the EPU. Luckily I have my 12 week scan on Thursday. Has anyone elae come across a situation where they couldn't get a reassurance scan? And have I done everything I should?

Is there any way you could pay private?

@Raindropumbrella - None of the private hospitals in my area offer emergency medical or maternity care. The other private scan places are all booked up until after my scan on Thursday

Our epu would be similar, they open Monday to Friday 9-4 and there's about a 5-10 day wait for a scan depending on how urgent its deemed to be. Only option is to pay for a private one, but they usually work the same hours anyway.

How awful for you. I hope all is well on Thursday Thanks

@Garman Look like I'm waiting for my 12 week scan on Thursday then. Can't get an appointment over the next few days with the private scan place in my area

Yes, my first pregnancy when I started spotting they couldn’t fit me in for a week because of a bank holiday backlog. I ended up having a private scan - maybe you could go further afield for one?

Garman · 06/06/2021 20:36

That's not long anyway, you'd be longer here too waiting for an epu or private one.

Raindropumbrella · 06/06/2021 20:43

As rubbish as it is, a wait until Thursday isn’t that long in terms of EPU
Of course that doesn’t make it any easier for you Flowers hope it goes well

Yes, I had exactly the same, a bleed at 11 weeks and no scan appts.

If you saw a heartbeat at 8 weeks though, statistically there’s a 98% chance of a successful pregnancy. And bleeds in pregnancy are fairly common. I’d still feel positive if I were you

Yes, not as long though. It's a very sad part of all the current restrictions.
In July I called my GP for bleeding and pain at 9wk, I'd had a private scan 5 days earlier and all looked fine. They couldn't get me in to EPAU for 4 days, unfortunately for me that was too late and I passed baby 2 days before the scan. I cancelled the scan to open it up for someone who still had some hope left.

Good luck with your scan
