Worried about a friend who is pregnant again after having severe PND last time.

She has a 4 year old and an 18 month old. After her second baby she had severe PND, it was a horrible time for the whole family and although her DH tried to be understanding it very nearly broke their marriage up. She has only just started to come through it all and get back to 'normal'.

So, I was very shocked when I met her at the weekend and she told me she was pregnant again. She said the decision was 80% hers and 20% her DH's but he seemed very unhappy about it whilst I was there.

What I want to know is, what are the chances of PND happening again?

A friend of mine had very bad PND with her first, but second time around she was given medication straight after the birth and was nowhere near as bad (slighty low, mostly normal). She recommended this to another friend who also suffered badly first time and she also had a better time second time around.

I'm afraid I don't know what the name of it was or even whether it would be appropriate, but it is worth looking into/ asking midwife, etc. (though of course it could be part of that fantastic NHS postcode lottery!)

I had pnd with dd,very badly,then ds again quite badly but got treated eralier and knew what was going on etc. Had therapy as well which helped. No pnd with ds 2 and now i have pnd after dd2. I guess there is no way of telling - we moved when ds2 was 6wks and all was fine! In my experience it has the other 2 episodes were/are easier as i and dh know what to expect,what medication works and that thereis light at the end of the tunnel.
