Using a Secondhand Bassinet Mattress?

I recently acquired a bassinet from a friend. Her little one never settled in it so they have hardly used it. I know that it is a rule to get new mattresses for babies so I am unsure if it is safe to use a secondhand mattress. It is covered and I am planning to clean all the bedding before we use it and I am happy to buy a new mattress if we need one but I'd rather save the money if not!

If its coming from another family then I'd buy a new mattress. It apparently causes more risk using a mattress from elsewhere than reusing a mattress for a sibling.

I would get a new one.

We used to reuse mattresses Grinyou know back in the Middle Ages aka the 90s. However there is concern about the SIDS risk. If the baby really hardly used it I would clean and go for it. If they slept in it consistently even for a short time I would buy new.

As you probably know new mattress is to reduce SIDS risk. However if you're friend's baby hardly used the mattress it is practically new anyway. Might be useful to consider if you have any other SIDS risk factors (e.g. smoking) that could sway you. Sounds like you could use the mattress if you want.

Probably would be fine if its barely used but I would probably get a new one just because SIDS terrifies me. My mum told me that she used the same mattress for me and my 2 sisters in the 80's...
