Working out dates

Have just found out (on fri) that I am pg with my 3rd. still in the not quite believing it stage (but v pleased). Did a home pg test and had done one about a week before which did not show as positive - obviously was too early. Don't know my dates as I haven't had an AF since I finished BF my DC2 5 wks ago. How early in pregnancy does the test show as a positive? Should I assume that I am 4 weeks pg? I am guessing at late july baby (in the hope that all goes well). Not seeing my doctor for another couple of weeks but am considering booking a private scan at 8 weeks (so just before Christmas) in case any family members guess and we have to say something. Would rather know that things are looking good before we tell anyone.

I did a preg test at 5 weeks and it was negative, did it a week later and it was positive. I was spot on with my dates so ive no idea why 1st one was neg. I would just wait for routine scan at 12-16 weeks.

Hi FourPlusOne I found out I was pg on Fri too (1st) My last period was 17 Oct so I am at 4 weeks. The Wednesday before the test was negative. Hope this helps.

you could go to the GP and ask for an early dating scan, they do these from 6wks onwards, it is routine in my area if you are unsure of your dates. HTH!

Thanks for your replies. Not sure if they have early dating scans as routine here, but it's worth asking when I do see my doctor next week.

I also found out I am prg again [on sat] and have no idea how far along I am as I forgot to keep a note of my AF for Oct. I am duessing that I am alo around 4 weeks, but wondered what an early dating scan involves and is there any risk to the embryo? My friend had a scan at 6 wks which involved some kind of instrument being inserted in her nether region, would it be the same process? Congrats to you both on your good news. All July babies [I think]!

ok, TMI response alert.
Early scans may (or may not ) involve an 'internal' scan, where yes, they put the ultrasound probe thingy, erm, up there. one must not laugh, nor die of embarassment, when sonographer / consultant slaps a condom and a good dollop of KY on said probe.
I have been in the unenviable position (oh dear what a choice of words...position.think about it) of having several of these scans in all three pregnancies due to early bleeding in all of them. Some girls get all the luck. Be warned. THAT'll teach you to remember ya dates!! Oh, and as you ask, it's the same as normal ultrasound, baby and mum are at no risk (that i've ever heard of) from the scan.
I have heard more recently that as technology is improving every year, they may not feel the need to do the internal scan to find very small bean. my youngest is 2 in a few weeks, so it's a while since we were in this situation.

Hi CA, no realy symptoms as yet but last time I was very nauseated for the first 4 months, very tired and also had bad taste in my mouth for the duration. It was like have a mild hangover, only it was premanent. The only way I got through it was by eating constantly. However, this was from about 6 weeks onwards and I knew exactly when my last period was last time so it was easier to work out my dates. I did have what might have been 'implantation bleeding' this month when I guessed my period should have been due that was what triggered me to do a prg tst. I thought it was the start of my AF but it never arrived so a few days ltr I decided to do a tst [make that 2 tests] to find out. Lo and behold they were positive. If my last prg is anything to go by I should start feeling sick next week, but I'm hoping this time will be different. Easier to indulge yourself when you have only yourself to think about, bit more difficult with DS1 and a part time job to think about!

I'm also going to have a July baby!
My last period was on the 14th of oct so I am 6 weeks pregnant - last week I went to Austria (where I am originally from) and went to my mum's doctor - and he did exactly this kind of scan. I did not find it uncomfortable as you can see the little blob on the screen - it's worth it! And I am now the proud owner of my first picture of my first offspring

My Test war positive 4 days before my period was due or to be even more precise - 10 days after my ovulation!

It could show positive as soon as around 9 days after ovulation. Implantation has to occur first, usually this is between 6 and 13 dpo (days post ov.) then the HCG has to build up a little.

So you could be 3.5 weeks, or a few more!

TVscans (transvaginal) are fine and often used for dating. I had one free but they might not do them at your hospital. Worth sking GP though
