I am just over 23 weeks pregnant, I think, lots of diff dates been given, and have just ahd a late 20 week scan. Both kidneys are full of fluid and it has been sugested it might be downs syndrome, have been offered amnio and been told to let them know next week if I want ana mnio ornot. I ddidnt think you could tell from 20 week scan about likelihood of downs, are they just making a fuss or there is really a strong possibility. Anyone else come across this?

I'm not really sure why they have even mentioned Downs Syndrome tbh, it seems a bit of an over reaction on their part. Confused

DS2 has a kidney problem, which was detected at my 20 week scan. They then did another very thorough scan to check for any other soft markers and the consultant (who did the scan) said that if there was more than one soft marker they may suspect Downs, but otherwise, it wasn't likely. I was scanned every 4 weeks and then he was on antibiotics for 6 months while tests were carried out. Again, my son has a different condition, but they won't really know the situation until your baby is born and it seems a bit crazy to be mentioning 5 years of antibiotics now. Perhaps they were mentioning worse case scenarios?

My son is fine, BTW and 12 now. DS3 does have Downs Syndrome and no problems were detected at any of my scans.

In case there is any confusion I meant to say that renal pelvis dilatation is more common in a certain sex not Down's syndrome.

There is a certain condition which is called posterior urethral valve syndrome which is associated with bilateral kidney problems and associated with only one sex.

Yes Bodicea, it's not a soft marker. It's a structural abnormality.

Bodicea · 13/06/2013 18:01

I think you are being a bit pedantic rash. I understand that most soft markers classically are normal variants as opposed to structural abnormalities but at the end of the day it is a deviation from the norm on a scan and many hospitals would treat it as a second soft marker if seen in conjunction with another soft marker. You wouldn't ignore the increased possibility of downs if you found structural abnormality of the heart in the same way. Like I said most hospitals would not bring it up as a soft marker if seen in isolation but a lot of hospitals still class it as a soft marker on their protocols which helps explain to the op why it has been brought up. Likewise some hospitals mention it after one soft marker has been seen and although this is a bit dated it still happens.
I think it's irresponsible to tell the op they must have seen something else as well on he scan that they have not told them about. That is highly unlikely as I would like to think most health professionals would give the full story before expecting pts to make a decision about an amnio.

Roshbegosh · 13/06/2013 19:33

Harmony would be better than amnio obviously.
Single soft marker, please...

nellyjelly · 13/06/2013 19:36

Harmony not wodely available yet though surely?

Bodicea · 13/06/2013 20:37

No the harmony isn't widely available.
At the end of the day there is no point speculating what has or hasn't been seen on the scan. The op would probably be be best discussing with her consultant what exactly has been seen and why they feel that an amnio may be neccesary so they can make an informed decision xx

At 36 weeks we found my little one had fluid on the kidneys and it was renal dilation, he went on antibiotics when he was born for 6 months had a few scans at gosh his first year and it has gone down loads we have another scan later this year but it’s been 3 years now and he will be discharged if the fluid is the same or less. The sonographer said it was quite common and knew lots about it - I would arrange to see consultant/midwife to get more info.
