I'm 32 weeks and at my growth scan the baby is measuring large so I've been giving blood sugar monitoring 4 times a day. I've just done a reading post meal and my reading came back at 7.7 on my booklet it said to ring if it goes beyond 7.8 I'm just concerned that this is on the verge of being classed as high? Did anyone read these readings and not have gestational diabetes? I'm convinced I'll have it now off that reading - I've only done 1 reading so far as I got it late today.

hello, what did you eat to get that reading? It will be interesting to see what your fasting and after breakfast readings are tomorrow.

Please don't worry until you know more. There's amazing website called 'gestational diabetes uk' that has lot of diet advice on it and information to get your head around what a diagnosis would mean.

Well, as you say, 7.8 and above is high, so 7.7 is ok! I've had GD now for 6 weeks, I was diagnosed at 28 weeks. I am still diet controlled so far. I would get a 7.7 after eating a small to moderate amount of carbohydrate with a meal. If I ate a normal (pre GD) portion of carbohydrate I would definitely be over 7.7. So if you ate, I don't know, a large jacket potato or a big plate of pasta and got a 7.7, I would say it's quite unlikely you have GD. If you ate mainly veg and protein with a very small portion of carbs and got a 7.7, I would say GD is more likely.

Thanks for both your responses really helpful! I ate a large portion of carbs so hopefully explains the higher reading... although hubby ate exactly the same as me and we checked his and it was 5.6! Will be interesting to see what the mornings fasting reading will read. It's good that your staying diet controlled , what symptoms did you have if any?? I am showing no symptoms other than a baby which is 32 weeks measuring 37 weeks

I got tested with my DS after my bump started measuring big. This pregnancy I just monitored my blood sugars and it started at 29 weeks. No actual symptoms and i've been diet controlled both times.

I think 7.7 is high for someone who doesn't have GD but you'll get a better view after testing more. Some women have 7.0 as a target as it depends on the area (although 7.8 is following NICE guidelines).

Did my fasting reading this morning it says the limit is 5.3 and my reading was 5.4 not really sure if this is a cause for concern ?? Tried a couple of numbers on my leaflet but all phones are turned off very helpful....

It has to be under 5.3 so 5.4 counts as a high. There’s lots you can do with diet to try and lower it without medication though. You could try a high protein snack before bed and see if that makes your level lower in the morning.

Trying to get hold of anyone at the weekend is really frustrating. Hopefully if you leave a message they will call you back early on Monday.

What did you have for breakfast?

mamababy1955555 · 22/05/2021 12:23

Yes, 5.3 is a high fasting reading. Mine is normally around 4.8 now I'm following a GD diet. It does sound possible that you might have it. I didn't have symptoms, although I was measuring big.

graciesmammy · 22/05/2021 12:31

My reading post breakfast was 5.2 and it says the limit is 7.8 1 hour post meal so that's quite a lot under so I guess only time will tell I had fruit and a yogurt for breakfast. I'm hoping the high fasting reading was due to a high carb tea lastnight which I didn't eat till 7:45

It sounds like a diagnosis will be coming your way soon. I'm on my second GD pregnancy and for me it always starts with high fasting levels in the morning, then post meals creep up to borderline levels and then it all just went haywire at 30 weeks both times, within the space of a few days several high fasting and post meal readings a day despite strict diet control and I was quickly put on insulin.

graciesmammy · 23/05/2021 09:56

Fasting reading was 4.1 this morning with all low readings yesterday so feeling a lot more confident that I don't have it! Think I just maybe ate to much too late on the Friday night to collect the higher fasting reading yesterday... thanks for all your advice Smile
