Oven cleaner while pregnant

Our cleaner has just filled our oven with oven cleaner and it smells throughout the whole house... I'm 19 weeks pregnant and so worried this is going to be dangerous, do you know the rules with oven cleaner and pregnancy?

Well you've started it now so all you can do it open windows/doors and wear gloves.
These things are better avoided during pregnancy.

I'm not doing the cleaning our cleaner is...

Sorry missed the cleaner bit. Tell them no more of it until after baby born and then preferably while you are out with baby

I’d crack open a window so you’re not breathing it in too much but it won’t do any harm.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 21/05/2021 12:16

Why don’t you go for a walk?

I’m guessing the cleaner had clean the oven on her task list, so if you didn’t want her to use oven cleaner, you should tell her and provide an alternative.

I have read before that oven cleaner is dangerous when pregnant... but I am not sure if that is if you are doing the cleaning. I would open all the windows and potentially go out for a bit. I am sure it will be fine but better to be safe.

Thanks I am upstairs whilst it is coming out. No, the cleaner absolutely does not have cleaning the oven on his list. Our oven actually self cleans and does not need to be cleaned manually which he knows but I think he cleans so many houses he has forgotten this.

Oven cleaner is nasty stuff regardless which is why it'll be advised pregnant women don't use it. As you didn't do the actual cleaning with your face close to the chemicals I wouldn't worry.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 21/05/2021 12:34

Either way, with ventilation you’ll be absolutely fine.

brushlaptop · 21/05/2021 12:35

Thanks all. We use the oven a lot for our food, is there any way that once the chemicals have been removed that it will get into our food?

If that was the case then surely it wouldn’t be safe for anybody to use oven cleaner ever? Confused obviously leave it for the recommended time before you cook in it.

There is no reason not to use oven cleaner specifically in pregnancy. It's advised to use cleaning products in a well ventilated room, so windows open as you would anyway will be fine.

Thanks all! 😘
