BFP after period

Hi all, hoping to see if anyone has had similar experiences. TTC #1
I had my period 10th-15th May, came on normal day, normal flow etc. 19th I realised my BBT had been up for 3-4 days since period, felt tired and sore boobs. Tested and got a BFP clear blue 2-3 weeks. Since done 2 more tests in afternoon urine, 1 very dark positive, today clearly positive but less dark (different brand). Boobs getting more sore and feeling a bit nauseous but probably psychological. Bit crampy.
Spoke with GP on 19th who said was probably an early mc so still got hcg, to retest in a week.
But I'm not sure - I have a 7 day luteal phase so surely not long enough to have implanted and produced enough hcg that its still showing 10days after a bleed? Thinking likely ectopic? Or could it somehow have implanted at end of my period? If actually am pregnant would be 4.5/5 weeks.
Thanks!

How confusing for you. I got a positive test after I had been bleeding for a couple of weeks and unfortunately was ectopic, but I’ve seen plenty of people have a random bleed on here and go on to be ok! I would keep testing and if they continue to show positive I would call the Epu so they can do bloods or a scan.

My fingers are crossed for you and sorry you’re in this limbo

Crazyhouseplantlady · 21/05/2021 06:40

Thank you for this, so sorry to hear about your ectopic. Were they able to catch it quite early on?

I was 8 weeks but my hcg levels were on the low side, they couldn’t diagnose it on a scan but the blood results indicated ectopic so I had a laparoscopy to determine it and remove at the same time.

I’d had a period in early September for 3-4 days then stopped, then on day 9/10 of my cycle I just started bleeding very thin red watery like blood for the next couple of weeks but it wasn’t super heavy. On day 21/22 I started bleeding really heavily which I thought was an early period but slowed down after a couple of days. The whole cycle had just been weird and I was due to go in a friends hot tub so just did a cheap internet test as a formality and you could have knocked my over with a feather when I saw the faint line. I tried calling the epu but they said you’re probably having a miscarriage and to wait it out, but when my digital tests went from 1-2 weeks on a Sunday to 2-3 weeks on the Wednesday I just felt it needed checking out.

When I thought I was having the early period I was getting niggling pains in my back, have you had that at all?

Crazyhouseplantlady · 22/05/2021 09:32

Thanks for sharing your experiences Chica. So sorry you went through this :( How have you been feeling since then?
I have been feeling quite crampy/backaches this week but I have IBS so it’s very difficult to distinguish. Totally felt like a normal period to me and if anything probably less PMS than normal. Haven’t had any bleeding since which is actually unusual for me as I usually have quite a lot of spotting throughout the month. So who knows! Still getting positive tests and now 12 days since my “period” so really think if it was an early miscarriage that I would stop having hCG by now. But will wait till Tuesday as the GP said and then hopefully get a referral to an EPU?

OP posts:
Chica1990 · 22/05/2021 11:07

Hmm that’s not great about the headache but good you have stopped bleeding. The EPU will probably try and tell you it can take a few weeks for the hcg to drop but not consider that probably isn’t the case if you were very early on. Have your positive tests been stronger since your first? If they are stronger or still there by Tuesday I would def try and be seen. In the meantime if you do get any shoulder tip pain I would go straight to a and e and keep an eye out for rectum pressure too.

I actually got a bfp again 3 months (to the exact day) after I had the surgery so I had a happy turnaround and am currently 23 weeks with a boy.

Got my fingers crossed for a good outcome for you! Let me know how you get on

Crazyhouseplantlady · 22/05/2021 12:42

Ah huge congratulations, so pleased to hear a happy outcome for you soon afterwards! That’s wonderful news! 😊
Tests haven’t become more positive but have been strong positives since the first one, has been less than a week so guess they wouldn’t have changed that much.
I do have rectum pressure and opening bowels more often but I get this the same with PMS normally so thinking it’s probably ok! If it changes or any other pain will bare that in mind though, thank you!

Hi @Chica1990 hope you’re well. Update for you. Started to get quite a lot of cramping and lower back pain over the weekend so went to the GP yesterday who referred to the EPAU. Also Clearblue test went from 2-3 to 3+ weeks this morning. Had an early scan at the EPAU this afternoon, can’t quite believe it but it’s not ectopic! In the right place. They could see a gestational sac and a yolk sac, couldn’t see an embryo or a heartbeat but they said that’s to be expected with a scan at approx 5+2 weeks. So they said all looks fine! Another scan in 2 weeks to check things are still developing as expected so that’s good.
Really don’t understand how I had what seemed so much like my normal period and am still pregnant but they said sometimes people just have a bleed for no reason, but that this was probably just heavy implantation bleeding. Said some people just get cramps etc and that can be normal too.
Obviously could still go either way as it’s very early on but I’ll never trust a period as a sign that I’m not pregnant again 🙈🤣

Thanks for the update @Crazyhouseplantlady I was going to check in with you tomorrow! So glad it’s not ectopic!

They’re right it would be early to see those things but that’s great they will check again in two weeks! Will keep my fingers crossed for you!

It’s amazing how many people do have a bleed but yea you will probably always wonder if a period is really a period now 😂😂

Crazyhouseplantlady · 26/05/2021 21:20

Thanks @Chica1990! Honestly what are the chances of getting a 5 day implantation bleed to the exact date I expected my period 😳 it’s going to take a while to sink in!
Best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy, I hope you’re feeling well xx

Just an update in case anyone comes across this in the future! I had quite a heavy bright red bleed with a clot yesterday evening (at 6 weeks 3 days) assumed it was start of a miscarriage but it stopped, and then I realised it was the exact day my next period would’ve been due which seemed way too coincidental! Knew the EPU wouldn’t see me again before my next booked scan next Wednesday but I needed to know so ended up booking a private scan for this morning. They found a foetus and a heartbeat and dated it exactly as I thought. Found a large area of bleed around the sac though. I’ve since spoken to the EPU on the phone and spoke to a lovely nurse and she said not coincidental, some women (including her) have a bleed when period would be due in pregnancy, for her it lasted the whole pregnancy. She said the area of blood on the scan may or may not be related to the bleed I had, so I may or may not bleed again, blood may just be absorbed, they’ll keep my scheduled scan for next Wednesday to see what’s going on. In the meantime she said it shouldn’t have too much in the way of implications, only issue would be if the whole area of blood goes at once and takes the sac with it but she said unlikely to happen and if i do miscarry it’s much more likely to be due to a chromosomal problem etc than because of the area of haemotoma.
So there’s my answer, first bleed and second bleed exactly on the days my period was expected both times and apparently this can (rarely) happen to people. She said it wouldn’t necessarily happen in future pregnancies but might do.
How strange!

Any updates at all @Crazyhouseplantlady xx

Crazyhouseplantlady · 29/09/2021 11:21

Hiya @Random98, I’ll be 24 weeks pregnant tomorrow, all going well! The area of bleed had been reabsorbed by my 12 week scan and I haven’t had any bleeding whatsoever since. I’m pretty sure both bleeds were hormonal, found a paper about decidual bleeds which is basically periods in pregnancy which says if they happen it’s normally just the first one or two periods then it normally stops x

@Crazyhouseplantlady hi just come across your post and this fills me with so much hope. I had my ‘period’ 28 days to the day of the previous month then tested positive 4 days after it stopped. I thought I was going crazy but after reading this maybe I’m not 😂

Crazyhouseplantlady · 27/05/2022 17:34

You’re not crazy- my weird positive test post period is now a happy healthy 4 month old baby! Good luck and hope all turns out ok :)

Did you have any bleeding inbetween? I’ve had some light bleeding spotting/ on and off for 2/3 days at a time. Spoke to the EPU and they said they wasn’t concerned and to call back if I was filling a pad in an hour or experiencing pain that couldn’t be calmed with paracetamol

Just to say how commendable and just nice it is for you to keep coming back to the post to update! I know it’s been a while now but the amount of posts I’ve went onto with questions and then never found out the outcome is insane. So thanks so much! Hope your pregnancy went well and you and baby are keeping well x

Crazyhouseplantlady · 26/05/2024 21:41

Ah thank you! My little boy is now 2 and a bit and his baby sister was born 2 weeks ago. I didn’t have any period-like bleeds with this pregnancy. We are all well thank you! :)
