How are the newly diagnosed GD ladies doing with their blood sugars?
Finally picked my monitor up yesterday, wasn't too bad after lunch and tea but too high after breakfast today already.
Really hoping rest of day goes okay, I've read lots of women struggle with carbs at breakfast so need to try eggs and cheese tomorrow!

Good morning @Bubbles1st!
I have to text 6 times a day. My pre meal results have been slightly higher than they should but my post meals have been mixed but ok. I started on one tablet every evening to try to lower my morning reading but it doesn't seem to have done much so I think they'll increase it to two on Monday when they review my results again.
Still waiting for my appointment for the clinic with consultant/nurse/dietitian to come thorough. But can text the nurse and dietitian which is nice & they have been so lovely.
How was your appointment yesterday?

bewitchingnight · 12/06/2021 09:37

Hi @Bubbles1st hope your appointment was ok! Mine have all been ok so far although I am really eating differently so I guess they would have been pretty high after meals if I hadn't changed anything. I was worried about after breakfast too as heard the same thing but the last two days have been fine (eggs must be the way forward!)

Annoyingly they only have me enough test strips for about three days so I'll have run out by tonight. Hopefully the GP will get on with sorting the prescription out on Monday morning.

bewitchingnight · 12/06/2021 09:40

@AdventuresAwait I'm testing x4 but after meals rather than before. It's quite interesting isn't it, it's only been a couple of days but there must be so many variables to each reading

Bubbles1st · 12/06/2021 09:47

@AdventuresAwait @bewitchingnight
The appointment was actually a waste of time, there was 3 of us which made asking questions uncomfortable but had to anyway.
All they did was give us some leaflets and the machine boxed and sent us on our way.

No demo or opportunity to try whilst there. Fortunately I went straight to lunch with my diabetic friend who gave me a fab lesson in how to do it all.

I'm only testing 4 times a day too, I 'think' I'll get a call Monday to discuss results but it wasn't confirmed. Fortunately i was given quite a few test strips and lances so have been testing a few extra times to see what's going on.

I will definitely try eggs tomorrow then as I was fine after bread at tea time yesterday and this morning all I had was oat cakes which get a good rep for snacks but obviously not good first thing!

Bubbles1st · 12/06/2021 09:48

@AdventuresAwait meant to add Hope that a second tablet works and you can avoid insulin.

OP posts:
bewitchingnight · 12/06/2021 10:04

@AdventuresAwait @Bubbles1st yes, hope the second tablet does the trick. That's rubbish that they would send you off without showing you how to use the equipment! I am supposed to monitor for a week (with no test strips Hmm) and then they'll call me and take the readings. I'm not sure what else happens after that! I have a regular midwife appointment next week so I'll actually have lots of questions for a change.

Hopefulmummie · 12/06/2021 11:43

Has anyone started packing their hospital bag? I was freaking out not having anything packed incase something happened so I have mine half packed and will pack one too soon for baby

AdventuresAwait · 12/06/2021 11:46

@Bubbles1st & @bewitchingnight, thanks!
It is my before before they're concerned about as most of my post meal results are ok. Not sure what else I can do.

AdventuresAwait · 12/06/2021 11:48

@Hopefulmummie, I have a list from the hospital ready to print off as I was just thinking about this yesterday! Going to start soon.
Do you have a good list to use? Or anyone? Think mine is pretty basic.

Bubbles1st · 12/06/2021 11:52

This list was from the honest midwife class I joined. Before I left half way because I didn't like her 😂

Hopefulmummie · 12/06/2021 11:56

@AdventuresAwait I just used a few lists I had seen people posting though going to see if I can find a detailed one to make sure I have everything included x

AdventuresAwait · 12/06/2021 15:35

Cool thanks @Bubbles1st and @Hopefulmummie! I've just done two more sessions of my online course and she gave a list too. Will start to get my bag sorted! Xx

GWhiteley · 12/06/2021 18:19

This is the list I put together with the help of a friend that's had a baby. My original list was somewhat lacking!

GWhiteley · 12/06/2021 18:20

Through having done a workshop on things like bathing & nappy changes apparently they suggest cotton wool pads & warm water only for the first 6 weeks at least - not baby wipes

Kirky658 · 12/06/2021 19:19

Omg how organised are you ladies packing your hospital bags, haven't even given that a thought yet!!!

Today we've bought an Ollie the Owl, room and bath thermometer, and a baby temp thermometer, and some teats for the bottles I have in case I can't breastfeed.scary now...

GWhiteley · 12/06/2021 19:57

@Kirky658 I haven't packed it, but wanted to at least have a list ready. I don't think I'll start thinking about packing it until maybe a few weeks before as we do t have tonnes of spare room

SillyBry · 12/06/2021 20:01

Gosh, I’ve not even considered my hospital bag yet! 🤣🤣
Last time, I bought water wipes whilst I was still on a full wage for the early days as cotton wool and water seemed a lot of faff for hospital.
I’ve got cheeky wipes for this time around, but will still pack a bag of pure/water wipes for hospital as frankly, convenience is key if you’re feeling wounded from labour!

The things I found most important - for me, we’re:

  • my own pillow. Hospital pillows are terrible
  • flip flops so I didn’t have to go barefoot in the shower
  • lip balm as gas and air is SO drying!
  • bottled water - it’s soooo hard trying to get more than a teaspoon of water out of them in hospital and it’s so blinking hot, I was super thirsty
  • I struggled to eat proper food in labour, so found Kendal mint cake/chewy glucose sweets good for energy
  • as for baby, a gazillion nappies, vests and sleep suits, just in case! 😉🤣
(I actually made up an “overflow” bag that I left in the car with more nappies and clothes in, just in case we were kept longer etc.)

It’s worth asking your midwife what the hospital policy is on bottles... our hospital allegedly will give formula to breastfeeding mums that are struggling. But not all hospitals will. Most will offer a hospital grade pump if they think you need it. But worth checking that - or deciding if you want to take some with you. Also, if you choose to bottle feed, you need to take a starter pack with you as you can’t mix it up at hospital.

I was told if you plan to breastfeed, don’t buy formula just in case as you’ll be too tempted to reach for it! 🤣

Kirky658 · 12/06/2021 20:04

@gwhiteley fair enough, I was impressed as I haven't even thought about it yet 😂 mind you I think you're slightly ahead of me, I'm 26+3 x

GWhiteley · 12/06/2021 20:48

@Kirky658 I'm a pa so a lot of my job is being organised & it bleeds into home life sometimes 😂

And yes I am a bit ahead of you at 28+1, though it's sad to admit it I did this list about 3 months ago. If I had the room & the money I'd have everything I need now, as it is I don't so am having to try & be patient & wait until closer the time before buying some things

FTEngineerM · 12/06/2021 20:49

@GWhiteley

Through having done a workshop on things like bathing & nappy changes apparently they suggest cotton wool pads & warm water only for the first 6 weeks at least - not baby wipes
Yeah, in theory their delicate little new skin should only be touched by cotton balls.

Those first black tarry turds just will not budge without some effort though, wet wipes are soooooo much easier.

FTEngineerM · 12/06/2021 20:52

There are only really three things I care about for me in my hospital bag 😀: massive shirt style nightyeasy access to boobs and the business end/catheter, massive adult nappiesI’ve never bled so heavy in my life, there is no pad that could have caught it and snackshormonal and hungry?!?!

Waiting for DP to get DS1s clothes out of the attic so I can wash and get everything ready 😢. Apparently it’s too soon?! Sooooo not too soon.

Kirky658 · 12/06/2021 20:57

@gwhiteley why not hun, if you can be organised nothing wrong with that. I'm suffering badly with anxiety at the moment so trying just to take things bit by bit. I said to DH today we are better buying a few bits each month now to spread the costs a bit too. X

GWhiteley · 12/06/2021 21:21

@FTEngineerM I might ask my midwife her opinion on it & see what she says. Could be that wet wipes are easier for hospital & then convert to cotton wool once home.

@Kirky658 ah hun, you just need to work at your own speed. I've never had it, but really feel for those that do have it & can't begin to imagine how hard simple tasks can be. Getting a few bits each month sounds like a good way of combatting that & not feeling too overwhelmed either now or closer to the birth. Sending you the biggest hug

Kirky658 · 12/06/2021 21:27

@gwhiteley thank you ❤️🤗 I go through phases of it being pretty bad, it's been ok lately but having a bit of a flare up now that I'm getting closer to the last 12 weeks to go. DH is a godsend though, so supportive and i'll get there. I just try not to think about too much at once! X
