First baby was big, what to do about 2nd?

Hi,

Long story short my son was born at 39 weeks at 10lb 1oz. We had growth scans after reduced movement, this was the only way we discovered his size. I had to have a csection for other reasons, so I was prepared for a bigger baby and bought 0-3 clothes.

However, I'm 27 weeks with #2 and don't need any growth scans as there are no concerns as they'd rather he be big than small.

With my first pregnancy, my bumps fundal height and width chart never flagged up any concerns (even though I was hugeeee Shock)

So I'm not sure if I should assume he will be big too and buy 0-3 or buy newborn size?

Our hospital is still not allowing you to leave and come back once your admitted, so DH can't do a quick shop run if we needed a different size

I realise this isn't a huge concern, I'm just not sure what to do. I feel he is big, purely because I'm the same size as I was with my first at this stage but I'm aware that could mean nothing.

I'm having another csection so I will be staying in overnight, I'll need a few changes of clothes for him. I'm only mainly concerned about the hospital stay as once I'm out DH can pop into shops and grab some appropriate size clothes once we know what he weights

They say usually the second baby is bigger, don't they?

My first was 9lbs when I had him at 41 weeks. My measurements were all on point throughout pregnancy. My youngest consistently measured ahead and I had growth scans with him due to this and other issues. I had him at 38 weeks due to pre-eclampsia and he was 8.5lbs. He would have been about 10lbs if I had him at 41 weeks.

I never bought newborn with either baby. Big babies run in our family. I bought a sizes that said they did up to 10 lbs for the hospital bags. I vaguely remember it was called first size or something. They lasted eldest a week and youngest about 2/3 weeks.

@OodieWoodie I do think he'll be big, the up to 10lb sizes are a good idea! I'll stock up on them. Knowing my luck I'll be prepared for a big one and then he'll be 7lb haha

Just to add an opposite view. My second was smaller despite me looking bigger! Positioning of baby can change size of bump. We had to go and buy tiny baby clothes for him-newborn drowned him for the first month

@Droppingdown oh god this is why I'm worrying! Haha, I'm gonna have to buy a couple of both sizes aren't I

Either that or get some super stretchy with the folding feet & hands that will squeeze onto a bigger baby/not look silly of big. I was amazed when he was tiny!

Try the up to 1 month ranges. Maybe rompers and socks in case of longer limbs.

Our son was 10lb 12oz and he fit in those for the 1st couple of weeks then on to 0-3. Newborn are not much use for larger babies.

Chelyanne · 17/05/2021 17:04

Places like Next are a really generous fit

I had a 6.10, 10.2 and a spot on 7lb-er.

I don’t know why the massive difference but they said to me that it’s within the realms of normality for me to go up to 11lb and it be considered ok (I’m 5ft 3, small frame, dunno what witch craft they are using to collate those figures).

Anyway like you I didn’t get growth scans for the second baby on the basis of previous birth size - I did have the scans but only because they thought she had reduced growth and would be under 4lbs.

Basically they have no idea. It’s all guess work as far as I can tell. I was scanned weekly with the 10lb + baby and not a single person in those 32 times said he’d be big. So I’d buy in all ranges, as I got caught out with the 10lb baby too, thinking he’d be the same size roughly as the first.

My 1st was 7.5.. 2nd was bigger at 8.5.. but then 3rd was 7.8 ?? Now 39+3 with baby 4! Wonder how much this one will weigh..
Yeah pack some first size and some 0-3 better the clothes to be too big than too small! :)

Hotcuppatea · 17/05/2021 21:48

1st baby was 9lbs 10oz. Second baby was 10lb 4oz. I was HUGE both times.

Fourleafclover93 · 17/05/2021 21:51

@AhaShakeHeartbreak12 some shops sell up to 1 month which is in between newborn and 0-3 months

MissBattleaxe · 17/05/2021 21:54

My consultant told me that second babies are often smaller. My first was 10lb13 and my second was 9lb8

Squidgling · 17/05/2021 22:00

My first was 10lb 1oz at 39+6 weeks. My second was 8lb 11oz at 38+5 weeks. I had a couple of newborn vests and sleepsuits we were given that I used but the best buy was the up to 1 month sleepsuits from m&s for baby number 2. She couldn't wear 0-3 months for about a month as they just hung off her shoulders. So get a pack of up to 1 month sleepsuits is my suggestion.

My oldest was 9lb12 and a few days early, went straight into 0-3 clothes and we had to swap a lot of gifts for another size!

I was pretty worried that the next baby would be bigger and he could have been but he was 10 days early and 9lb3.

When dc3 was born 3 weeks early and only 7lb15oz I had to look about for newborn clothes and was lucky enough to have a friend who gave me loads!
