6 week scan

I had a complete molar pregnancy in 2019. I’m now pregnant again and phoned my local EPU. They’ve told me to come in at 6 weeks, which I was a bit surprised at as I thought that was early to see a heartbeat or whether it’s a healthy pregnancy. I feel like I’ll probably go for this early scan and end up not knowing and waiting anxiously for another scan for a week or two.

Can anyone share their experiences of 6 week scans and what they could or couldn’t see?
Thanks

I had a scan at 6 weeks, they saw a yolk sac and that was it. Thry rescanned me at 8 weeks amd saw a heartbeat. I found it reassuring as I had had some serious pains and bleeding and I was worried it was ectopic. Now 20 weeks pregnant. Hope it all goes well for you Flowers

I've seen a heartbeat at 6wks 1day, and at 6wks 3 days in my pregnancies - so definitely possible.

lockdownbabyx · 16/05/2021 19:56

@MargoGru sorry to hear about your loss. I had a scan at 6+4 and just saw a blob and a heartbeat. They also measured me just under 6 weeks. Same as you, I only had this scan due to previous losses, including an ectopic. With that said, a few friends have had scans at 6 weeks and couldn't see anything other than a sad, gone back a couple of weeks later and all was fine. I do think early scans cause unnecessary worry, if you can wait a couple more weeks I definitely would. Xx

Thank you @Samanabanana @IWouldBeSuperb sounds like it could go either way then! I mean, I’ll be worrying anyway with or without the scan.

I had a scan at exactly 6w a few weeks ago. They could see both sacs but nothing else and said they couldn’t confirm a viable pregnancy.... it was pretty horrendous.

My return scan was at 7+5 and the little heart was beating away there Smile

MySocalledLoaf · 16/05/2021 20:00

Heartbeat at 6w both times

MargoGru · 16/05/2021 20:01

@lockdownbabyx thank you, I agree that it can cause extra worry and I questioned whether I should wait longer but the EPU said there was a good chance they’d be able to see by then. And I couldn’t quite bring myself to turn it down!

Thank you for sharing @MySocalledLoaf @TakeYourFinalPosition
I don’t know if you get a yolk sac with CMP or not, I will look into that.

And congratulations to you @TakeYourFinalPosition all the best for a healthy and happy pregnancy

@MargoGru as long as you prepare yourself you will be fine. I had to remind myself that even if I couldn't see a heartbeat it doesn't necessarily mean bad news! I'm the same as you though, I couldn't turn down the early scan haha. Good luck, have everything crossed for you x

spookycookies · 16/05/2021 20:08

I've had 3 scans at 6 weeks and seen a heartbeat all three times.

Flutterby8 · 16/05/2021 20:17

I had a scan at the EPU when I was 6 weeks due to constant pain.
The did say it was unlikely I'd see much but I could see basically a blob with a heartbeat. It was very reassuring seeing a heartbeat as I had a sudden loss of symptoms and just constant pain.
I havent had my 12 week scan yet and I am absolutely terrified about it but keeping fingers crossed.

MargoGru · 16/05/2021 21:06

Good advice @lockdownbabyx
@spookycookies that sounds reassuring, thanks for sharing
@Flutterby8 blob with heartbeat would be amazing! Hope you have good news at your next scan too, wishing you all the best

Update - been for scan today. They could see a sac but no yolk sac and dated me at 5 weeks 3 days. I know it’s early days and had told myself not to expect a heartbeat... but pretty worried not to see a yolk sac. I’m going back in a week to be scanned again. Has anyone experienced similar?
Thank you x

@MargoGru I'm sorry you didn't get to see more! Hopefully you are just not as far as you thought. This is the only issue with early scans, they can cause so much worry. Fingers crossed for your next scan, keep us updated ☺️ xxx

bages1977 · 27/05/2021 10:25

I went for a scan when I though I was 6 weeks and got dates back to just less than 5. Went back 10 days later and saw the baby and a heartbeat. Like you, I was worried even though I'd prepared myself not to see much so to then be dated back just made me worse. 6 weeks scans are far too early tbh unless they're just checking it's in the right place

lockdownbabyx · 27/05/2021 11:56

@bages1977 I totally agree, I had one at 6 weeks this time but that's only because of a previous ectopic. So I wanted to make sure it was in the right place. Try not to panic OP, easier said than done I know! Xx

MargoGru · 27/05/2021 19:02

Thank you @bages1977 @lockdownbabyx just have to wait and see... I agree, 6 weeks is too early, I probably could have put it out of mind had I waited... but the EPU offered it and then I couldn’t make myself wait longer!

Update here - I went for second scan and saw a yolk sac and a heartbeat. They couldn’t see a fetal pole but seemed to think that was ok for dates. Going back in 3 weeks. So I’m reassured for now.
