UTI left too long?

I had a urine test a couple of weeks ago but lost my sample so gave another one and turned out I had a UTI so was given cephalexin for 5 days and that was that but a day or so later I was still going back and forth to toilet even just after having a sip of water so went back for another urine test that showed that my white blood cells were raised in my urine but didn’t want to give me more antibiotics so they sent the sample off (this was Tuesday).
I rang back Friday to ask for my results, my doctors are usually really good and have the results within 2 days but I rang back after 3 and was told the nurse hasn’t looked at the got to ring back on Monday, so that’s what I’m doing tomorrow but worried if the last lot of antibiotics didn’t work I would have had this UTI for like 3 weeks now and that’s a long time.
I’m also a worried about going back on a different antibiotics after just coming off some a week or so ago, anyone else have a problem like this before? I’m in my second trimester - 25 weeks.

Sorry to hear. I have had a nightmare time with UTI's this pregnancy. They picked up high nitrates and whatever else in my urine at my 20 weeks scan (at the time i felt fine) so said they where sending it off for further tests. Next morning I woke up and had that burning yuk sensation when you wee and knew I had a UTI. I went on ahead and rang me GP and got prescribed a week long course of anti-biotics (apparently a week is the standard for a UTI in pregnancy as a doctor at maternity later told me, so the fact you only got a 5 day course might not be right, but could just be where I am, im in Northern Ireland). Anyway by the time I got a letter from the maternity unit saying I had a UTI and needed to contact my GP I was already on day 6 of my course of anti-biotics, so very glad I didnt hang around waiting on hospital to contact me. The doctor also prescribed me a certain kind of antibiotic until results came back on what type of UTI I had then I was switched to a different kind for the remaining 5 days.

At a midwife appointment a week later my urine was tested again just the standard dip test and it came back a really low level of a few things but nothing to worry about she said. I ended up missing 2 check ups 28 weeks and 31 weeks due to isolating from COVID so as baby hadnt been checked in a while I got an appointment at the maternity outpatients at the hospital at 33 weeks where my urine came back high in about everything, including protein which is a sign your kidneys arnt functioning properly. I personally suspect I had this UTI the whole time from 20 weeks right up until that 33 weeks appointment. After staying in outpatients all day (they wouldnt let me leave till lab results came back) i was just below the protein level of where they admit you so was allowed to go but had another week long course of antibiotics and had to leave urine samples in every other day. Anyway it eventually cleared and within myself I did feel better. Ive had 2 more since 33 weeks and its been awful. Ive maybe had 2 UTI's in my life before this, non with last baby so its been stressfull. I would say tho baby is perfectly fine. She's grown super and there has never been any issues with her health throughout. I ended up buying those home urine dip tests which I would advise you to do if it comes back again so you can test yourself at home. I picked up these last 2 myself and was able to ring GP straight away.

This pregnancy I had a UTI and they started me on Macrobid after I'd had symptoms for a week which didn't work but they wouldn't change it for 3 days and after that I started 10 days of Cephalexin which cleared it up. So that was over a week of no effective treatment and two rounds of antibiotics for basically two weeks.

If the first round didn't work you'll have to try another round - I know how that feels, I felt the same way, really not happy about it, but you have to clear up the infection. I would ask them to do a culture and make absolutely sure these antibiotics are the best ones for the specific bacteria this time. GL x

@georgarina @PFin thank you both for replying to my thread, Ahh gosh I’m sorry you’ve both gone through rubbish times too with UTI’s!
I was exactly the same never had a UTI before pregnancy and now I’m on my 3rd one and it’s just making me feel really anxious to be on antibiotics a lot and having infections too!
I definitely think I should invest in the dip tests! Where did you get them from if you don’t mind me asking please? Just so I can get some to keep on top of it all!

Yeah its just something else on top of everything being pregnancy brings along that you dont need. Its so hard too pick them up to esp later in pregnancy, the further you get on you wee more frequent anyway and yon can wee and still feel like you need to go Hmm just so annoying! I got the tests of Amazon these exact ones. They gave me peace of mind too, was able to check everything was ok!
