Hi i know that this will sound very paranoid but i bought some of that feta and olive mix that you get out of the large bowls in tesco's, and when i got home i really fancied some so had a bit.
But now am freaking out that it might have come from unpasteurised milk as i didn't think to ask the lady at the deli counter.

Can anyone tell me if its OK to eat i'm 13wks pregnant tommorrow and I'm really worried about it !!!!

I know I'm mad !!

it's pasteurised as far as I know, so don't fret. I used to be the same when pregnant !

Yes, all feta, ricotta, cream cheese etc. It's things like brie and camembert and blue cheese you have to watch out for. The only time I would be vaguely concerned is if you got some from those cheese shops where most cheese isn't pasteurised (like Neals Yard) but I think even then the risk would be minimal.

Thanks for such a quick responce !!

pasteurised mayonnaise is ok too by the way. Stuff like hellmans that is on the shelf in a jar.Its only stuff that isn't pasteurised that is a problem.

slim22 · 16/11/2007 12:00

Most feta is pasteuriized.
However, next time, safer to buy a sealed jar rather than from an open bowl in a deli counter. You don't know how long it's been there.

sweetbean · 16/11/2007 12:00

new about the mayo but the soft cheese thing i find a bit confusing e.g is goat a sheep cheese ok ??

I think its irrelevant what they are, just whether they are pasteurised or not. If its in a packet it will usually tell you clearly on the outside.

lailasmum · 16/11/2007 12:06

Lots of supermarket stuff is pasteurised because it has a longer shelf life where as if you bought the same thing from a deli it wouldn't be so I don't think you can generalise, just read the packet or container.

sweetbean · 16/11/2007 12:33

didn't have a packet i just put it in a tube but i think it will be ok ( i hope)

Its should be absolutely fine. As long as you are a normal healthy adult even if you ate something ever so slightly contaminated your body would more than likely deal with it without consequence. Obviously its not advisable to throw the guidelines by the wayside but don't panic either.
