20 week scan - nerves!!!

Tomorrow I have my 20 wk scan, this is our first baby and I'm so nervous! There's been no signs yet to say anything is wrong - although don't think I've felt movement yet, nothing I can be certain of. Not much of a bump yet just know I've put weight on.
My 12wk scan was fine and my combined screening results were all low risk, I'm just so nervous that tomorrow something will be wrong!
Also...how full should bladder be on 20wk scan? My letter just says to drink the same amount as I did for my 12wk scan but my bladder was too full last time and needed lots of half a wee! 😬

I didn’t feel any movement until a couple days after my 20 week scan and then it just felt like bubbling!

I was told I didn’t need a full bladder for 20 weeks and had a couple of wees while waiting for us due to the baby pushing on my bladder!

HayB · 13/05/2021 17:57

Hey! I have mine tomorrow too, not first pregnancy but still the same anxious and excited feelings.

I drink a bit before I get there and then chug a bit more nearer my appt, otherwise I am super uncomfortable espesh if they are running late. Better to be too full then not enough.

Don’t panic if they don’t say much at the start, they tend to do heart first and the measurements so all takes longer then 12 wks.
Hope all goes well! X

I was exactly the same as you - so nervous that I actually had tears of relief when the sonographer told us everything looked well Smile. I didnt have a bump either (wore my normal jeans to the hospital!) and hadn't felt any movement. I'm now 25 weeks and starting to show a bit more although still not massive and can feel her wriggling around in there Smile.

I was told I didn't need to have a full bladder for the scan as everything was bigger than it was at 12 but maybe that's just my hospital.

Wishing you the best of luck - I'm sure it will be absolutely fine Smile

@penguin7 I know how you feel.

I had my 20 week scan today and barely slept a wink last night!

Fortunately everything was ok and baby looked reassuringly normal. I had a fairly full bladder but had to empty it as it was restricting sonographers view!

As PP said, don't be worried if they go quiet at times. They have a lot to look at and can be tricky at times. Took sonographer about 20 minutes to get all the views of baby's heart that she wanted.

Sounds like everything is on track to be fine so try and enjoy it :). Let us know how you get on x

Rosieposy89 · 13/05/2021 18:22

Good luck. You need a full bladder - I overfilled mine and was told to empty it completely at one point in the scan. I was terrified for mine last week. I have to go back next week for a repeat one as they couldn't see the bladder, legs or cervix as baby was curled up in an awkward position - this is very common so don't worry if they can't see everything x

penguin7 · 13/05/2021 19:05

Aww thank you everyone for your reassurance! Hoping everything will be ok! Hoping I sleep tonight!
@HayB good luck with yours tomorrow!
@LunaDreams Glad all was well today!x

I don't think you need a full bladder? My letter doesn't say anything about drinking before the scan and I'm pretty sure from last time I didn't need to either. I had to go back for a second one last time as they couldn't take all the heart measurements because of DD's position, which isn't unusual as PP said.

Wishing you the best for your scan, mines next week and I feel nervous too even though like you so far everything's been fine and this is my second too.

sarah13xx · 13/05/2021 19:59

I was so worried about mine too! The main thing I just couldn’t stop thinking about was hoping the parts of the heart were all okay. Someone we know just had a baby with heart problems and it was so awful for them all but they had found out from the scans so I was really worrying about that. I went for mine and was in for ages! My bladder isn’t strong enough to be able to drink loads of water now 😂 learned that the hard way at my first scan! So I now drink a lot a good few hours before it/night before then stop within an hour and go to the toilet half an hour before my appointment. My bladder has been full enough every time doing this without me almost wetting myself! So I went to my scan and it went on for ages then there were some bits they weren’t sure of. She whispered to the other woman to ask if she could go and get someone else in. I thought oh god this is what happens in films when they give them the bad news 😞 but it was fine. One of the few things they couldn’t check was the heart because of baby’s position so I had to go away and come back 3 weeks later! At the next one they couldn’t see past his head to check where the placenta was joined to me so asked to do an internal scan. I knew this was a possibility for early scans but hadn’t considered I’d need one this late on! It was completely fine though. Luckily I had found out the gender at 16 weeks and did a balloon thing and kind of celebrated it then because I definitely didn’t feel like celebrating when I came out the 20 week scan 🤦🏼‍♀️ You will be absolutely fine!

I have mine today at 21 wks and 2days and I’m a bag of nerves haven’t slept at all have a raging headache this morning and my appointment not until nearly 4pm so am going into work just to occupy myself until then but we have decided not to tell anyone really other than DM and MIL as I’m so worried about everything being ok, I’ll be so glad when today is over and hopefully everything will be ok and I can start to tell the world.. tbh the way I’m growing I don’t think I can hide it for much longer anyway GrinCake

BeeDavis · 14/05/2021 10:09

I had my 20 week scan yesterday, I was a little anxious but literally the night before I was laid in the bath and felt baby kick properly for the first time so it made me feel a bit better! Everything was fine and cooking as it should be. I probably drank half as much water as I did for the first scan as I had to empty my bladder for that! The scan was sooo clear we could see baby’s little face it was amazing. We had to look away when she moved further down so we didn’t see the gender as we’re not finding out 😂 good luck today! 🥰

LunaDreams · 14/05/2021 15:41

@penguin7 how did it go?

4Minions2CallMyOwn · 14/05/2021 17:18

Hope it went well today OP!

penguin7 · 14/05/2021 19:57

Hi everyone!
Aww it was good today! Good news, Baby developing as they should be. It was a man doing the scan and he was lovely. I told him that I was nervous and he was so reassuring and answered all my questions!
I feel so much more relaxed now. Going to make a list at the weekend now of what we need to buy!
Thank you all for your replies and helping to ease my anxiety!☺️
