28 weeks and baby movement feels different - normal?

I'm 28 weeks and over the last week movements feel different. I've always been able to feel him well despite anterior placenta, apart from one week where he turned feet down and I couldn't feel his kicks as well. From 18-26 weeks I was getting strong kicks I could see and feel with my hand, getting stronger as the weeks went on. The last week or so, I still feel him lots, but I get less kicks and more rolls and pressure where he pushes outwards, plus I've felt hiccups a few times. Is it normal for their movement to change from kicks to more just wriggles and pushing outwards? I'm only 5"1 and was a size 10 before pregnancy with very narrow hips, so am thinking perhaps he doesn't have the space to do big kicks now?

I'm a midwife - as pregnancy progresses, the movements might change from kicks & jabs to swishes & rolls, but the pattern and frequency should always be the same. If his pattern has slowed down at all then please check in with your maternity unitSmile they shouldn't slow down towards the end.

@littlemissalwaystired thanks so much for your reply. I am feeling him just as much as usual I think, just in a different way, so seems ok based on what you have said :)

Yes it's just due to there being less and less space for your baby.

MintGreenLife · 10/05/2021 10:32

@littleredberries makes sense :) just wanted to be sure. This is all new to me as is first baby!

If you have any questions always ask your own midwife or triage.

@littleredberries That is absolutely not true, babies don’t run out of space. It’s a complete myth and dangerous to tell mothers that.

AllTheCakes · 10/05/2021 13:00

OP, this website has very good advice: www.kickscount.org.uk/movements-important

MintGreenLife · 10/05/2021 14:38

@AllTheCakes thanks, will take a look :)

@AllTheCakes hmm, that page is just about a reduction in movements, which I'm not having, just a change in the type of movements.

I have this, I'm 30 weeks. She used to kick like she was trying to get out, now it's more turning, flips handstands with the occasional kick. She just doesn't have the space to be doing the massive kicks anymore I suppose.

MintGreenLife · 10/05/2021 15:48

@PutOnAHappyFace sounds the exact same as me :) good to know it's normal x

@MintGreenLife I'm 32 weeks and my movements feel a lot more muffled, rather then one short sharp kick... more like a rolling movement or kicking against a pillow

LittleTiger007 · 10/05/2021 16:04

I definitely found that movements changed at about that time. (I’m 38 weeks) as people have said, as baby runs out of space the movements become more pushes and rolls than kicks. I get some kicks up under my ribs but mainly the baby presses their limbs out trying to find space. It can be quite painful!

Luckyelephant1 · 10/05/2021 17:06

I'm exactly the same, 31 weeks now and for the last 2-3 weeks the movements became less kick-like and more swishy/rolling, or sometimes like a heartbeat. I did get checked out at triage because there was one night where the movements were actually reduced, and all was fine.

AnxiousAnnie86 · 10/05/2021 17:15

@Luckyelephant1 I was in triage yest as movements seem to of reduced so so much! She was non reactive on monitoring but heartbeat was all fine they said perfect, but movements still reduced. Scan tomorrow morning at nine. How long did yours take to pick back up xx

Oh mine was clearly being mischievous because as soon as I was seen in triage the movements started again. They monitored for a bit and were happy. Hope your scan goes well x

hkp288 · 10/05/2021 20:23

I phoned triage 2 weeks ago at week 28 due to what I thought was a change/reduction in movements and was told it may be more difficult for me to feel kicks in 3rd trimester due to anterior placenta and that I may feel more rolls and pushes which I’d agree is how it’s changed. I used to be able to see actual kicks on my belly but now I can’t but still lots of frequent movement.

MintGreenLife · 10/05/2021 20:53

@AnxiousAnnie86 thanks for the reassurance ☺️ Feels much the same to me!

@LittleTiger007 yes that’s it exactly, I’m getting lots of pushing outwards and less kicks, and when he does kick it feels more internal if that makes sense.

@Luckyelephant1 I think the heartbeat thing is hiccups? I’ve had a few instances of this over the last week.

@hkp288 that’s it exactly! I was getting lots of visible kicks before, now I can see him pushing out, or might feel a foot sticking out for a moment or two, where as before it was the visible pulsing from lots of kicking.

I had this about 26/27. Ended up going in to check. Hard firm kicks became muffled.

I’d advise checking. They told me they thought baby had turned from facing outwards to inwards so I wasn’t feeling as much. Frequency was the same

MintGreenLife · 11/05/2021 10:08

@NamechangeTTC thanks for your reply. I have a consultant appointment this afternoon, so will ask about it then :)
