Accidentally drank alcohol

Just that really. Went to a restaurant, ordered a mocktail, received one of the alcoholic variety. Drank about half of it before I realised! Baby was moving lots and lots straight after and am now worried! Google search surfaces lots about FAS..! Anyone else been in the same boat and all been okay? Am 19 weeks...

You’re totally fine. You can’t cause FAS with half a cocktail. Or a whole one. Or two.

Have a cuppa and back away from Doctor Google. Your baby is ok.

Arrierttyclock · 09/05/2021 09:49

What kind of cocktail was it? I would be so angry at the restaurant!

Pomped · 09/05/2021 09:50

Definitely make a complaint to the restaurant!!! But your baby will be totally fine. Stressing is probably going to cause more harm.

iverunoutofinspiration · 09/05/2021 09:58

@Arrierttyclock it was a Mojito. Yes was fuming!

Please don’t worry! I drank quite a bit before I found out I was pregnant and panicked and mumsnet was really great at settling my nerves.

I’m 14 weeks and have still had the odd small glass of champagne to celebrate a few big life moments going on with the family and I read the expecting better book which said the off glass of wine is absolutely fine, and I have read lots of good articles about it.

Binge drinking - big no.

Odd glass of wine with a meal - is fine.

Your choice though and I know the NHS advice is just not drink at all.

LongLiveGoblingKing · 09/05/2021 10:05

Don't panic, you will be fine. My babies have always reacted very wriggly to cold drinks and sugary drinks so that could have caused them to wake up a bit more so than the alcohol.

Teakind · 09/05/2021 10:09

I'm sure a one off will have no effect on the baby but I would be furious with the restaurant. Did you complain to the manager? Is it a large chain?

It's not only pregnant women who avoid alcohol, it can also be for other reasons including ex-alcoholics, religion etc. It is completely unacceptable.

iverunoutofinspiration · 09/05/2021 10:44

@Teakind I know, I'm a non drinker anyway which is how I could tell after a few sips! It was a local pub and I did complain, they apologised profusely and gave us our meal for free but you can't put a price on anxiety..

The whole drink probably had an absolute maximum of two units of alcohol in it. You probably consumed less than one unit before you realised. Please don’t worry.

tiredanddangerous · 09/05/2021 12:53

A few sips of alcohol won't cause a problem op. It really won't.

Thefaceofboe · 09/05/2021 14:15

I would be really annoyed with the restaurant but your baby will be fine :)

otterbaby · 09/05/2021 14:19

I would be angry too, but your baby will be absolutely fine. A one off absolutely will not cause FAS. Or any other problem for that matter. No need to worry Thanks

georgarina · 10/05/2021 21:31

Please don't worry!! Like others have said FAS is caused by serious heavy drinking, not a one-off half a drink. Lots of women continue to have a glass or half glass of wine etc when they're pregnant.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 10/05/2021 21:33

That was nice of the restaurant. It’s not really the big drama you’re making it out to be!

orangejuicer · 10/05/2021 21:33

I hope you're ok. Baby will be fine.

Quote impressed you didn't notice any alcohol straightaway Grin

SmidgenofaPigeon · 10/05/2021 21:35

Sorry that came across badly. I meant nice of the restaurant to give you your meal for free. You only had a few sips, it would do nothing even if you’d drank the lot! They made a mistake, no one got hurt, relax.

EastLondonArtist · 26/05/2021 00:03

Yes don't panic, I'm 17 weeks and have 1-2 very small drinks 1-2 times a week - knowingly. Heavy drinking causes issues like FAS. A few sips of a cocktail once with a meal will not cause any issues whatsoever!

Happycat1212 · 26/05/2021 00:05

I drank loads before I found out I was pregnant with my first, didn’t cause any problems

NiceGerbil · 26/05/2021 03:35

It's fine.

FAS you need to drink shitloads all the time. And even then it might be ok. It's a diagnosable syndrome.

FASD is.. not so well evidenced. To say the least. I mean. Well. Got a lot to say but won't!

Of course it will be fine.

Baby gets a tiny amount of what you get. Diluted etc.

Please don't worry. Just forget about it. Honestly.

DollyParton2 · 26/05/2021 07:51

A lot of women consume 1 or 2 glasses of wine a week in pregnancy and babies have been completely fine. I started enjoying maybe 1 glass wine/ bubbly a week from about 30 weeks. Of course half a cocktail won’t have damaged your baby in any way- please chill!
