Black spots in vision

Hi everyone, wondering if anyone can help. Last day or two I’ve had a few bouts of black spots, like lots and lots of tiny tadpoles darting across vision. Only lasts a couple of minutes. I’m 37w.
I’m already a nervous FTM but it’s got me thinking of pre-eclampsia straight away. However, I have none of the other symptoms (no swelling, no headaches, BP has always been normal). I have had a very active day today so wondering if that’s the cause?
Anyone have any experience of PE who can reassure me? Everything I’ve read suggests it’s more flashing lights or colourful ones rather than black dots.

Hi OP. I don't have any experience of what you describe but I do know that the staff on the maternity ward would always rather you were over-cautious and got checked just in case. Do you have either an out-of-hours number for your midwife's team, or the number of the labour ward?

Sounds like a migraine, best to get checked by a professional as headache can be a sign of pre eclampsia.

I had the same in late pregnancy to the point where I’d go blind for about 2 mins every so often. Turned out it was some kind of migraine.

I’d get it checked out to rule anything else out.

Do these black spots persist? Or do they come and go? I think it is better to see a medical professional to get it checked up. They could be a systemic issue - eg blood pressure related or it could be something localised to the eye (so they may be able to refer you on to ophthalmology if they think it is warranted)

I had this in my previous pregnancy I think it had prettiness too with my iron levels. They wer very low. Have you had yours checked?

Curlymam88 · 08/05/2021 19:37

Something to do I mean sorry

Hey, I’m a FTM too! I’m 38 weeks and started having these weird black “floaters” in my eyes around week 30? Went to Specsavers because I was paranoid & they checked me out and said it’s perfectly normal to get them in pregnancy but nothing was wrong! Apparently they’ll go away a few weeks after birth. I too was scared it was preeclampsia but my blood pressure is fine and no other symptoms x

I had this they called it a migraine with an aura I'd never had them before so it scared the life out of me. I had to go to bed and sleep it off. I had a couple but have been fine since they weren't to worried but said if it happened again they could do a blood test to check for any other problems.

My midwife said that when it was happening I should have contacted triage straight away she was annoyed that I waited until the next morning when it had gone to speak to my GP

Best of luck

Hi my husband just had an eye operation. He was seeing black spots floaters everywhere and it was there for 2 weeks. It got worse then his eye went blurry so he went to opticians who sent him to A&E straight away. The next morning he had surgery done. They said if he didn't have surgery he would have went blind. I just thought he had dust particles in his eye but turned out it was a detached retina. Do get it check just to rule anything out. Best wishes x

Try not to panic about the potential of things like a retinal detachment. Cover one eye and then the other and see if they're in one or both eyes. If they're in both then it's very very unlikely to be a retinal detachment. People tend to notice things like floaters at this time of year as it gets brighter. It'd be worth having your bp checked and mentioning to your midwife.
