Will be 6 weeks PG on my birthday - can I have a glass of something boozy or not??

Just found out I'm pregnant and DH is taking me out for a slap up meal on my birthday - would a small glass of vino be naughty do you think?

Personally, I would have one. I didn't find out until I was six weeks pregnant and had some massive nights out in the early days. Apparently until six weeks the alcohol wouldn't even pass through to the baby or something.

A small glass of vino should be ok IMO

You've got to make that call yourself.

Weigh it up between the offcial line which is now NO alcohol in pregnancy against the hundreds of women who drink at the stage you're at not even knowing they're pregnant yet... and the countless others who figure that one drink isn't going to make much of a difference.

If it helps you decide, I drank the occasional glass of wine (average one glass a fortnight probably) throughout both of my pregnancies, and bubbly once or two on special occasions.

At 6 weeks pregnant I wouldn't have been able to cope with a glass of wine (but also wouldn't have been able to cope with a slap up meal either).

I'm sure it will be fine.

First pregnancy I was overseas doing a very scandanavian midsummers piss up and had no idea I was pregnant.. felt very bad when I found out, but went on to have a very healthy babe.

The official UK guidelines may be NO drinks (have you noticed they suggest that too if you are trying to conceive? (some people would be dry for ages before they ever drank again!) but this time around I have had the occasional drink too. As my midwife says if you can't have the odd drink what the hell is there left not to do?!

Thank you all for your replies - it's a bit tricky isn't it??? Am I right in thinking that between 5-6 weeks PG and until the placenta kicks in at 14 weeks, that alcohol goes straight to the baby and that it's particularly sensitive at that time or have I just made that up?

i had a couple of small glasses at our anniversary dinner when i was about 10 weeks along and it all went okay.

I could only drink bubbly when I was PG...so I'd say make sure you only have the best, than if baby gets it you know it's good stuff

Champagne apparently contains more iron pint for pint than guiness .... not suggesting in the slightest that you should drink a pint tho ... LOL.

PIYP ... Its your choice, but make sure you enjoy your very last (childfree)birthday, you'll find getting a babysitter in the future is such a pain, and if you're anything like me, you'll never go out again !!

my problem is that two glasses i allow myself occassionally doesnt even touch the sides! its prob a good thing as there's no real incentive to drink at all if i don't feel it....

people ask me what cravings i've been having, and the only answer i can give them is whiskey! fags!

I heard a news article on the radio, not sure the source saying that there may not be a link between binge drinking and foetal abnormalities after all! Did anyone else hear this?
But if you think about it the people who likely to be foolish enough to binge drink on a regular basis whilst pg are the types of people who would abuse their bodies in other ways, IMO, i.e. not eating properly, maybe smoking or taking other drugs.
BTW one glass of wine with a meal would be fine, I would have thought. With all the conflicting advice going about I would err on the side of caution and keep the alcohol to an absolute minimum. Actually a lot of people can't stand alcohol in the early stages - I was one of them, but even now at 34 weeks I very rarely have a drink and if I do it's just the one.

What a tremendous article! It's very true though, you really do have to filter the info carefully. I wonder what happens before the placenta kicks in in terms of metabolism of alcohol - I guess as that stage of filtering is 'missing', then baby would get more than if it was there.

I gave up the fags before baby #1 so I SO understand , the heathen that I am!

From what I've picked up on, a few doctors advise that you don't have anything impure, even thoughts!

but the general opinion by the majority of the pregnancy related health professionals is if you want ONE glass of wine every now and again it will do you and your baby no harm

also at 6 weeks your little one is living off a yolk sac (just like a chick in an egg) and not off a placenta attached to your blood supply so you do not need to worry

lots of people dont even know theyre pg at 6 weeks and are imbibing worse than a wee glass of wine.

Thanks for that - I think I will have one small glass of something on each of the things that are coming up between now and new year, which would makes it one a fortnight! The hardest one will be a dinner party in a couple of weeks time - I don't want to tell them that I'm PG yet. I think I'm going to have to.
