When did you all first wash your baby clothes ready for baby’s arrival and how early is too soon??

I only washed vests and basic packs of babygrows as closer to the skin etc but didn’t wash any outfits in case they didn’t fit!

StillUpholding · 05/05/2021 19:19

I washed all mine when I started Mat leave at 36 weeks. It was lovely seeing all the tiny things on the line. I also ironed everything- vests, muslins the lot, because I was clearly nuts. I’ll do the same washing-wise for DC2 (baby stuff has been shoved in a drawer for a few years and def needs freshened up). Not planning on ironing it though Grin

I'm 25 weeks and I've washed the newborn things that I've gotten out of storage plus a few new vests

idontunderstandwhypeopledothis · 05/05/2021 19:27

I think if you ironed them you'd never find the time to do anything else! 😂

HeeHawSeeSaw · 05/05/2021 19:30

I washed all the newborn ,1 month and 3 month clothes at about 36 weeks.

idontlikealdi · 05/05/2021 19:40

My mil washed anything I bought, no idea why, I just let her carry on as it made her happy.

Luckyelephant1 · 05/05/2021 19:44

OK good to know nobody irons the baby clothes lol, I barely iron as it is but was curious.

sunshinecitrus1 · 05/05/2021 21:43

Love all of the replies! So interesting to read everyone’s opinions on this! I am going to be washing everything but don’t think I could bring myself to iron it all lol!

I washed all the up to 1 month and up to 3 months clothes, blankets, bedding etc, just a random load a week from about 35 weeks. No chance of me ironing anything though! I don't iron for me never mind for a baby that won't care haha

OldFirstTimeMum · 06/05/2021 13:26

I did wash and iron them. That first time I want them looking like new, all pressed in the drawer. I wont keep ironing from here on in though! It didn't take long as everything is so small. It was a nesting activity and I enjoyed it! Some things were clean but second hand and some things were new. They've still been handled though and passed around by who knows who. So I definitely wanted to know that everything was properly clean.

I’m planning on washing by about 30wks. I couldn’t not wash my own clothes after knowing the manufacturing process let alone baby’s clothes. The residual processing chemicals alone need washing off not to mention all the other nasties.

LittleTiger007 · 06/05/2021 15:54

@MikeWozniaksGloriousTache (fabulous name by the way!) I agree with you I always like to wash new clothes and especially for a new baby. I washed everything for the first 3 months about 2 weeks ago and I’m 38 weeks now. I ironed them the first time like @OldFirstTimeMum but I def won’t be keeping that up! It’s lovely having outfits all clean and ready, especially in case baby comes early.

Bramblebutter · 06/05/2021 16:16

30 weeks ish. Washed all clothes and soft toys until about 6 months. Now I don't wash clothes before he wears them.

Caspianberg · 06/05/2021 16:46

Agree, I wash all my own clothes/ bedding/ curtains/ everything before use. If you see the manufacturing of them, then how they are stored before purchasing, you would def want them washed.
It’s fine to wash weeks before you need them though, they aren’t going to become filthy sitting in your own chest of drawers storage over 1-2 months

Reign21 · 06/05/2021 18:00

@Pinkblueberry

Do people iron all their baby clothes...

All? Does anyone iron any of them??? I bow down to anyone who found the time and motivation to iron their own clothes once they had a new born, never mind the baby’s 😅

I have ironed all mine! But I'm really funny with textures of clothes (I have to have them really soft) and ironing helps. If I tumble dry them for too long they don't smell fresh so ironing is the next best thing! (proper weirdo🤣). Interestingly enough, my first weird pregnancy sign was not being able to tough the washing when it was wet! It made me gag!

I really recommend not washing everything but just a few things and leaving the tags on the rest. You might find you have more than you need in one size and want to exchange for a different size.

We didn't wash anything specially before first use (most was second hand anyway) but I have friends who did wash everything and regretted it because they couldn't return anything (including an entire unworn newborn set of everything because baby was too big and went straight to 0-3!)

MrsMiddleMother · 06/05/2021 23:30

I washed everything around 28 weeks

DramaAlpaca · 06/05/2021 23:33

I didn't wash anything that was new.

The second hand bits I was given I did wash.

Luckyelephant1 · 06/05/2021 23:36

Omg people washing clothes before 32 weeks, I'm nearly 31 weeks and still need to buy a lot of clothes! I looked through what I have and realised I've only bought the pretty stuff and forgot to buy the basics like plain sleepsuits 😳

Definately · 06/05/2021 23:45

28 weeks and I'll start washing soon probably, when we get a dry spell to hang them out. I've bought some second hand bundles so want to get them clean and smelling like our own clothes.

Have a look on Facebook marketplace for newborn and 0-3 bundles, you'll get people selling all the vests and sleep suits you'll ever need for £5-10!
PerspicaciousGreen · 07/05/2021 09:06

@Luckyelephant1 90% of my kids clothes from birth are second hand eBay bundles. Love em!
