Private room costs!

I've just found out that a private room in our local maternity unit is £46 per night - sounded reasonable i thought, until i found out that this is without a bathroom. I asked if they have any other rooms and they said they were £80 per night but the bathroom was private, but not en-suite - instead it was down the corridor!

Does anyone else think this is a lot of money for nothing or are all other hospitals the same?

They vary hugely from hospital to hospital. Not many NHS hospitals will have ensuite facilities I imagine.

CarGirl · 14/11/2007 12:19

I think it is around £100 per night here but that does not include an en-suite nor a private bathroom!

Sarahjct · 14/11/2007 12:46

Huh, try Epsom. £175 per night and all you get is your room and bathroom, which isn't always en suite. They were very sure to make it clear that everything else, meals etc were exactly the same as everyone else's.

Still want a private room though...

SazzaK · 14/11/2007 13:20

I went to Chelsea & Westminster it was £800 a night (though included full private postnatal care, different ward, and different meals but I still send husband to Pizza Express). Compared to that having a wander to the bathroom sounds a bargain. But unless they give you a key I guess other people might use it anyway!

about £80 for ours, shared bathroom (with one other person)

£100 ish a night, without a bathroom.

i quite liked being in the general ward, i liked chatting and just not being alone after 8pm, etc!

chunkypudding · 14/11/2007 13:49

am obviously dumb but don't have any idea whether I can even get private room at my hospital. Have looked on NHS website and it doesn't say anything... umm, who do I ask???

Sarahjct · 14/11/2007 14:06

They mentioned it when we had our tour.

I was very tempted to say that I could get a room at the Dorchester with room service for half that...

chunkypudding · 14/11/2007 14:27

hope I get a tour then!! have 2 (yes 2!!) antenatal classes (1 labour, 1 b/f) and 2 physio with the NHS so guess at some point during that I will??

MegBusset · 14/11/2007 14:39

Ours was £180 a night, did have ensuite (and I did appreciate it as was leaking blood like mad after delivery).

PrettyCandles · 14/11/2007 14:45

At UCH it was just under £100/nibht (no bathroom) or just over £100/night (with ensuite). But oh so worthwhile. Especially after dd and I both developed heat rash because the ward was so warm. I could sleep with the window open in the private room.

Lucky13 · 14/11/2007 22:17

Wow - london prices are extortionate! I guess mine isn't bad - but it is a small town hospital.

I was just expecting that a private room would have a bathroom - as they do in other parts of the hospital. I can't understand why maternity doesn't have them.

Last time i was there all the toilets broke except one and it was chaos. I'll be there a few nights - hence the reluctance to pay too much.

Chunkypudding - do they have an office for private patients - that's where we have to phone.

My frined had a private room & it was £70 a night this was with a bathroom.

LadyOfWaffle · 14/11/2007 22:21

Frimley is £100 without a bathroom.

tiredmummynow · 14/11/2007 22:30

I'm going to be paying one hundred notes and it comes with a ensuite. I am calling it my xmas present to myself!!

mixedmama · 15/11/2007 11:40

At my hospital in London it is £120 per night... I believe with en-suite. means i can go to the loo without having to leave LO completely, which bothered me last time.

I am hoping to be discharged within 6 hours tho.

Gemy · 15/11/2007 19:29

I have a private room with ensuite and didn't pay a thing! I was in there 3 days and they said they'd invoice me. Nothing ever arrived! When I chased it after a few months, the women I spoke to at the hospital said there was some admin error and not to worry about it!

I think they said the cost was something like £100 per night.

But, cleaners do just wonder in whenever they want no matter what you're doing so not much enphasis on the 'private' in private room.

deaconblue · 15/11/2007 20:27

That's dead cheap compared to most places. Ours in Surrey was £80, filthy dirty and no bathroom. Mind you the fools never bothered to charge us despite us offering to pay on leaving, giving an address and having stayed 3 nights.

mumzyof2 · 16/11/2007 08:19

Ours is 30 pound without bathroom and 45 with. Very good hospital too.
But as someone earler said, you may only shower once if you are only in for one night.
