Hi, I’m currently pregnant and had my 12 weeks dating scan,

They estimated me to be 16 weeks which is impossible, I know for sure I am 14 weeks, exactly 2 weeks after the date the midwifes are saying.

I don’t know if I’m just being silly and not knowing how these things work but I’m really confused as i am definitely not 16 weeks and I don’t know if that will affect anything in this pregnancy if they think I’m 2 weeks further then I know I am, has anyone had the same experience?

Pregnancy is dates from your last period, so technically the first two weeks of pregnancy you’re not pregnant as the egg hasn’t yet been released or fertilized.

Thankyou for your reply

When they measured the baby they said it measured at 16 weeks so is that still to do with the 2 weeks when your not actually pregnant? This is my first baby and I had no clue about how these things worked! I know at first they go off your LMP but I thought that changed after the dating scan? Which in my case it’s stayed the same?

The date of the scan is the adjusted gestational age and it would include the extra two weeks before ovulation.

So if you are counting 16 weeks from your LMP, then your scan dates are spot on.

If you are counting 14 weeks from your LMP then your baby is much bigger than expected and it can affect your expected delivery date.

It happens sometimes, I had 10 days added to my gestational age, baby was growing a bit too fast but no more than 10 days. She then arrives 4 days earlier than that too. Clearly I had a baby in a hurry to get out and see the world!

Ultrasounds are not exact science. As long as you baby is healthy and growing well, that's all that matters.
