Antibiotics and Pregncare

Hello! ☺️
Here to ask how did people space their antibiotics and pregnancy vitamins or did you not?
I’m on cefalexin and take pregnancare, I usually take the pregnancare around 9ish-10ish at night (I know it should be with meals but I’m awful at remembering) like last night I didn’t take the until 2am as I fell asleep and woke up and decided to take them as it’s better than not but I’m taking my cefalexin at 9:30am and then at 9:30pm.
Do I have to space out when I take the vitamins as well so I don’t take them at the same time as the antibiotics because maybe they won’t work or be less affective or is that not a thing?
And if I took the vitamins at 2am if I had them now, so less than 24 hours could that do any harm to baby? Or do I have to wait 24 hours or skip this one today and take them at a normal time?
Thanks just looking for some advice ☺️

I don’t think there’s anything on the pregnacare pack or instructions about having to take them at exact 24 hour intervals so I wouldn’t worry that you took them at 2am and then taking the next at 9pm personally. It says take with largest meal of the day so surely most people don’t eat dinner at the exact same time every day and might have dinner at 6 one night at 9 the next for example? Not sure about taking them with antibiotics though and whether you can or can’t. If you take your antibiotics at 9.30am and pm can’t you just set an alarm every day for around dinner time so you take your pregnacare at say 6pm? I set an alarm at 6,7,7.30 and 8pm every day to take my pregnacare with dinner as I literally cannot remember without the alarm and I just keep snoozing them until I’ve had dinner and then cancel any later ones once I’ve taken it!

You need to be a bit careful with the timing of cefalexin and zinc (which Pregnacare contains) as zinc can interfere with the absorption of the antibiotics.

They need to be separated by at least three hours so you could try having your antibiotics morning and evening and your Pregnacare at lunchtime?

Hope you're feeling better soon!

Thank you both for getting back to me!
@Peaplant20 I want to switch so I’m taking my pregnancare during meal times and was afraid that if I switched there would be a 12 hour interval instead of a 24 and don’t want to over load her on vitamins!
Okay that’s brill I’ll start to take them with my supper, making it as we speak haha thank you!
@FabricPigeon ahh that’s really good to know thank you! I’ll do that, I took my antibiotics at 10 this morning so will be at 10 tonight now and I’ll take my pregnancare now with this supper so there will be 3 hours then in between! Thank you both for the advice!

@FabricPigeon how did you find out the information about the zinc? When I had to go on antibiotics I tried Googling about whether you could take pregnacare at the same time and couldn’t find anything out! @dazedconfusedtired that makes sense maybe you could just gradually bring it forward an hour or two a day until you get it to where you want!

FabricPigeon · 02/05/2021 19:21

@Peaplant20 I'm on long term prophylactic cefalexin for recurrent UTIs and checked the side effects online when I started it so I could be aware and found it on here www.nhs.uk/medicines/cefalexin/ but it is buried a bit.

I would think with most antibiotics the patient information leaflet should have any possible interactions but I know hardly anyone has the time to read them, especially when they're feeling rough!

Peaplant20 · 02/05/2021 19:37

@FabricPigeon thanks! I did actually read the whole antibiotic leaflet but I also couldn’t find anything about it there! Maybe they’d expect you to check with the gp?
