I am posting on behalf of my BF.

Last week, thinking she was 7 weeks pg, she started to get a small amount of light brown 'old blood' discharge. She rang GP, obviously worried about MC and they sent her for a scan Friday. The sonographer said there was no sign of pregnancy, although womb lining very thinck, but she couldn't see a sac etc. She made her to a pg test which was positive. She saw consultant who said she must have been much earlier on than she thought, and that she has miscarried v early, hence no sign of pgy on scan. Since then (nearly a week) she has had NO bleeding and other signs of MC i.e. cramps etc. I had a mc myself 3 yrs ago, at 6 weeks and it was like the heaviest period I had ever had and very painful.
The sonographer didn't do a vaginal scan, which is what I had when I had scan prior to my mc as I was so early on, they couldn't see anything on abdo scan.

I don't want to get her hopes up, but it sounds like she might still be pg, but earlier on than she thought???

Any thoughts anyone?? Anyone else experienced this with a positive outcome?
She is still testing positive on pg tests, although I know the hormone can stay in body a few weeks. Thanks

At seven weeks she should have had a vaginal scan. She should go back and ask for one.

belgo · 14/11/2007 10:34

an abdo scan at seven weeks is a bit of a waste of time.

JolieGirl · 14/11/2007 10:36

That's crazy they didn't do a transvaginal scan at this early stage. She should call her GP and get herself back down there ASAP - or did they tell her already to come back in a week or two? Alternatively if she can justify it then she could consider paying the £50 or so it will cost to have a scan done privately for a much quicker appointment (and in my experience) a more detailed, thorough exam using much more modern equipment

goodcatholicgirl · 14/11/2007 10:43

yes they have told her to go back in 2 weeks if she still hasn't 'expelled' anything (sorry).
It does sound weird doesn't it?

Hi,
I don't think they should have offered her a scan at 7 weeks as it is unlikely that anything will show up, i had bleeding at 7 weeks but was'nt scaned until 10 weeks by vaginal scan.
I think they say old blood is ok, fresh blood is more worrying.
I bled through out both my pregnany's, mainly old blood but mine was due to a cerical erossion and i had 2 healthy babbies.
I hope your friend is ok.

goodcatholicgirl · 14/11/2007 10:44

I was really suprised they hadn't done a vag scan. She didn't know they even did them so didn't know to ask.

Marne - sorry to disagree but at 7 weeks you would absolutely expect to see something - ideally a pregnancy sac with a foetus and heartbeat in it

belgo · 14/11/2007 10:46

from abput 6 weeks they can often see a heartbeat during a transvaginal scan.

I had a transvaginal scan at what should have been 7 weeks. I could clearly see a sac, but no heartbeat and they put my pregnancy at 5 weeks. I miscarried the next day.

goodcatholicgirl · 14/11/2007 10:48

i thought that joliegirl, i saw sac at 6 wks when i had vag scan

OracleInaCoracle · 14/11/2007 10:48

they should have done a vaginal scan and should def have ruled out an ep. at the substandard care some women recieve

Marne · 14/11/2007 10:48

I had a scan at 10 weeks, they could'nt realy see alot so they scaned me vaginaly and then saw the sack, i was them told i was only 8 weeks.

Marne · 14/11/2007 10:49

Maybe i'm wrong

mistypeaks · 14/11/2007 10:58

I had old brown bleeding early on in my 1st pg. I'd done a test really really early and was really crap with dates etc so when I had a normal scan and they couldn't see anything the consultant did a vaginal one there and then. (she was really rough as well - cow!!) You could quite clearly see sac and a little kidney bean with a tiny little heartbeat. I was put at 7weeks pg. And going by when I gave birth that was pretty much spot on so yes you can see at this stage by vaginal scan and the bleeding turned out to be nothing to worry about. I hope your friend has a similar outcome.

goodcatholicgirl · 14/11/2007 11:02

Thanks all. I have just spoken to her again. Still no bleeding but feels really nauseous and sore boobs, worse than a week ago, bless her though, she thinks she's going mad and imagining it. She is gonna go to GP tomoz to get sent for scan.

I had dark blood & pink blood a few weeks ago, went for a scan and I measured 6+5 but they could only see gestational sac, no yolk sac or bean so was sent back a week later - expecting the worst due to bleedng and loss of symptoms....got tiny been with heartbeat and measured exactly a week on. This was abdominal but had they not seen there, they would have done another vaginal scan.

Agree they should check because of risk of EP, I get so annoyed with these people not doing their jobs properly!!

Hope she's ok!

HandbagAddiction · 14/11/2007 17:43

At 7 weeks you should definitely be able to see something with an abdominal scan. I was scanned at 7 weeks abdominally and a heartbeat was very visible and clear.
