Genetics & baby’s sex/weight

Hi everyone!

I was just interested to know your thoughts on whether the weight or sex of the baby is determined by genetics (by this I mean it follows the father’s side for example)

The reason why I ask and am curious- my husband’s side of the family give birth predominantly to males. My husband is one of 3 boys as is his dad. My husband’s brother recently had a baby which also turned out to be a boy.
My mother in law refuses to acknowledge the possibility of me having a girl, to the point of it not even being discussed as a potential. Do you think that genetically, I am more likely to have a boy?
(Obviously not looking for definitive answers, I am just curious!)

The same goes with weight. My MIL’s sons were all over 10 pounds, and my recent nephew from husband’s side weighed 11 pounds 3 oz when he was born. Of course, to my MIL this now means inevitably I am going to have a large baby eye roll which sometimes isn’t the most reassuring of thoughts so early on.

Any thoughts on this? Anyone else been involved in similar conversations with their families and did you manage to grin and bear it?! Haha!

Thanks in advance x

Weight, I think is probable genetic although environmental factors can effect this. (Ie gestational diabetes). Mine were all similar weights girls 7lb 7 and 7lb 10, son 8lb 2.

As for the sex of the baby I hear that's based of what sperm wins the race 😂🤦🏼‍♀️.
However my husband is 1 of 3 boys, we have 2girls and 1 boy and due a another girl.

My husband and his sister were big babies (around 10lbs!) and I was scared I'd have big babies, but myself and my siblings were all average weights (in the 7lbs) and fortunately both of mine followed my side!

You do hear of families who seem to produce only girls or only boys but I'm not sure if there's any science behind it?

Every family for 4 generations on my mums side has had a girl first followed by a boy (or boys). But tbh it seems unlikely that it's anything other than a coincidence, and I suppose not a wildly unlikely combination.

Weight - my daughter weighed the exact same as I did (7lb2). My son then weighed a fair bit more (9lb), slightly more than both my husband (8lb8) and my brother (8lb12), could be argued he took after either of them.

My husband was an average size 7lb, his sister was 10lb! Then on my side my brother and sister were both average weights, but then I was a bloated 9lb (although my mum got gestational diabetes with my pregnancy, which was why).
So from both families there has been average and large babies (interestingly, the last babies were the big ones)

Your MIL is being a bit rude, I wonder if she is jealous she didn’t have a girl and is projecting onto you?
Re. size, I think it’s influenced by both parents and the size you were. If you were both very large babies, chances are yours would be.
If I were a betting woman, I’d say based on the family, my money would be on you having a boy.

Nothing is certain and to me it sounds like your MIL is trying to dampen your spirits for some bizarre reason
