"Old wives tales"

I'm currently 28 weeks pregnant with my third baby and have opted not to find out the sex until the birth.

So, just for a bit of fun, I was thinking about the old wives tales about predicting the sec and wondered if any are proven to be true? Or if there were any that turned out to be true for your pregnancies.

My DM told me a theory about the heart beat being faster than 140bpm for a girl and slower for a boy. That one did work out with DD but DS was always around 140 so was giving nothing away.

Ring on a necklace, can't remember which is which but is circles one direction for a girl and the other for a boy

Inmypjsagain · 29/04/2021 19:41

Most of the old wives tales and Chinese calendar predictor said girl.... I’m having a boy! His heart rate was 156bpm too. So not true for me! 😊

Moorelewis · 29/04/2021 19:43

Chinese calendar got it right both times for me. Heart rate was wrong.

hewegoagain · 29/04/2021 20:21

Chinese calander got it right for me too and for most mums I know too. I'd be curious to know if there are any other mums who's baby's gender was predicted correctly that way?

Also I always heard that how you carry your bumb can predict gender. I think a high sitting bump for a girl and low carrying for a boy. I carried really low with DS but I doubt it's very accurate for the most part.

Standrewsschool · 29/04/2021 20:26

I did the ring thing and can’t remember if it was correct on not. Also, I there was an added part to the ring that predicted I would only have one child. I was quietly upset at that and it was only when my son child was safely born two years later that I could put that superstition to rest.

What’s the Chinese calendar theory?

xsjrx · 29/04/2021 20:30

Chinese calendar was wrong but the ring reading was right for me.

StrawberriCream · 29/04/2021 20:40

The reason old wives tales stay around / are believed is that 50% ish of the time they are right, no accuracy to it just pure luck. It'd be like if you said the day before birth if you flip a coin and it's tails you will have a boy - no scientific proof to it, just pure chance - but it would be right for 50% ish

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/04/2021 20:42

Chinese calendar was right. But it's pure bollocks chance.

Spaghettiamaretti · 29/04/2021 20:45

My first two pregnancies I had no sickness at all and had a boy each time. My third pregnancy I had horrendous nausea and had a girl. That particular old wives tale rang true for me but I know it hasn’t for others.

LunaDreams · 29/04/2021 20:47

I'm having a boy and had cravings for salty food, dry hands and no real nausea which are all old wives tales! Obviously just a fluke but still a bit of fun!

milleniumhandandprawn · 29/04/2021 21:12

Worse morning sickness with a girl than a boy - was certainly true for me!

Also craving salty things with a boy and sweeter things with a girl.

@Warrickdaviesasplates

I'm currently 28 weeks pregnant with my third baby and have opted not to find out the sex until the birth.

Not a sex one but the link with hair and indigestion is true. Also another one is that women with pcos don’t get morning sickness - that was a LIE
Warrickdaviesasplates · 29/04/2021 21:20

Oh I'll have to look at the Chinese Callander one as I haven't heard of that.

I've just had slightly worse morning sickness with each pregnancy so that one doesn't seem to work for me.

I also craved sugar with both dd and DS but with this pregnancy I've actually had no cravings at all, I've just been really put off of food (even chocolate!)

@GrumpyHoonMain I do tend to agree with the hair=heartburn one, I've had awful heart burn with my previous two babies and again in this pregnancy, both DD and DS were born with loads of hair! I'd be so surprised if I had a baldy baby this time.

I've heard of the ring one so I'll try that later. I did look up the nub theory after my twelve week scan and that pointed to girl so out of the two methods I've looked at I've had different answers.

Craving sweet things for a girl and awful sickness for a girl

PurpleIsTheColour · 30/04/2021 06:49

The heartbeat one was true for us, first scan was 167bpm and I am currently 27 weeks +3 with a little girl 😊😊 even now her heartbeat is still around 150 when my midwife checks it

FirstTimeScared · 30/04/2021 07:23

My dad did the necklace on a chain and predicted girl from when we announced at 12 weeks. Never once altered and we are indeed having a girl 🥰

Hufflepuffsunite · 30/04/2021 11:17

My first i had all girl symptoms - he was a boy! Second, totally different symptoms - he was another boy! So I don't think symptoms count for much. Nub theory is meant to be pretty accurate although I never saw a nub on either of my scans.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 30/04/2021 11:24

I had no heartburn in first pregnancy... Bald. Bad heartburn second pregnancy... Full head of gorgeous black hair

(I had completely different symptoms with both pregnacys and have two girls)

Ava50x · 30/04/2021 11:25

Hair= heartburn thingy wasn't true for me.
Suffered horrendous heartburn in all 3 pregnancies, first 2 were bald, 3rd had a shock of hair. No difference in heartburn!

AyyX · 30/04/2021 11:37

I had a girl and had nausea for about 17/18 weeks, preferred salty/sour food.
Currently pregnant with a boy, no sickness or nausea, prefer sweet stuff although that has calmed down now.
Both completely different pregnancies for me.

What’s the Chinese calendar theory?

mamaatthegym · 30/04/2021 18:14

I had horrendous nausea with DD from 5-22 weeks...currently 8 weeks pregnant with horrendous nausea AND vomiting this time so could be girl again! But my mum had had 4 kids, 2 girls 2 boys and had awful sickness with all of them so maybe I’m just like that too Grin

Sceptre86 · 30/04/2021 19:50
