Folic acid after 12 weeks?

I’m currently 19 weeks and have been taking folic acid up until now purely because I figured I might as well use up what I had.

During ttc and pregnancy I have been taking a higher dose folic acid (due to my bmi being over 30), I buy this myself, it’s not prescribed, so I can easily just buy more if I want to. I also take a higher dose vitamin d.

I have plenty of the vit d tablets left, but my folic acid is nearly out.

In previous pregnancies I’ve not bothered taking it after 12 weeks, but I’ve read conflicting advice about whether it’s now recommended to continue taking it throughout.

I just wondered what everyone else has been advised or what you’ve chosen to do?

My BMI was 32 at booking and my consultant wants me to take extra folic acid throughout my pregnancy.
I was given it for free, if they recommend you take it then they should prescribe it for you.

Thank you, my bmi was 31. I just told my midwife I was taking it and she just said that’s good. Didn’t offer to prescribe it.
I don’t mind buying more, it’s a huge pot and has lasted me ages so one more tub will likely last me the rest of the pregnancy.

But it’s good to know you were told to carry on. I think I will too, it’s not going to do any harm.

The consultant wanted me to continue with my regular dose of folic acid till birth. There seems to be some limited evidence that it us beneficial in more complicated pregnancies.

Thanks both! I’ve ordered more which will be here tomorrow so I’ll just carry on with it! 😊
