Has anyone had this in pregnancy or labour?

Im only 16 weeks but what i thought was urine infection doctor has just confirmed its strep B. Hes given me antibiotics and will take advise of what else is needed during pregnancy.

I wasnt sure if it was something they tested woman for after giving birth? Ive given birth twice and its never been mentioned before.

It's not clear - was the GBS in your vagina (detected by vaginal swab) or your urine? Makes a big difference!

Sunsetswim · 26/04/2021 20:54

@FeistySheep it was urine sample. Doctor was pretty vague though saying it can be infection in my vagina. Thats a good point though.

Well if they found GBS in a urine sample that does tend to indicate a UTI. It's very important to treat it when you're preg. Did you get antibiotics?

Unless they said the sample was contaminated? Ie there was bacteria from your skin on the outside? You would think there'd be loads of strains though, not just one. And they should have said that the test was inconclusive and asked for another sample.

FeistySheep · 26/04/2021 21:32

Oh sorry, just saw you did get antibiotics, that's good. And Def a UTI then, as they don't give them for vaginal GBS until you're actually in labour.

AngstyMom · 26/04/2021 21:33

Yeah, they give you IV antibiotics in labour and may decide to keep baby in for a couple of days of antibiotics too.

FeistySheep · 26/04/2021 21:35

Wow I'm really nonsensical tonight! 🤣 I meant to add that you might have vaginal GBS, or not. Now they'll suspect it, so you should get a vaginal swab nearer your due date and if positive you'll be offered antibiotics in labour to protect the baby. Ask your midwife at your next regular appointment ☺️

FedNlanders · 26/04/2021 21:47

I had fast labours and neither myself or baby (x4) have ever had the antibiotics.

Sunsetswim · 26/04/2021 21:51

Thanks @feistysheep thats really useful to know. Ive started antibiotics and doctor is calling back tomorrow so have a few questions to ask.

Im going to stop googling its just making me feel panicked

At least it's been picked up on early.
I did a private test for it around 30 something weeks. Luckily came back negative.

Wishing you all the best x
