I've read stuff before about how it's dangerous to sleep on your back when pregnant. I'm currently only 11 weeks pregnant, does this side sleeping thing only apply to late pregnancy or should I be sleeping on my side now. also does this apply to when I'm laid on the sofa?

I wouldn’t worry yet it’s in third trimester more info here

Like the above poster says it's just later it can be an issue. I stupidly didn't realise this and have been sleeping on my side since 1st trimester, so if you do like sleeping on your back I'd enjoy it for a while longer. I can't wait to eventually get back to it.

When I was looking some websites suggest sleeping on your side from 16 weeks, some as late as 28 weeks. I started from 14 weeks to try and get into the habit as I’m usually a back sleeper x

It is most important in the 3rd trimester for blood flow, it is good to get in the habit early though.

The best side to sleep on is apparently you're left. However you may well move in your sleep and end up on your back, which shouldn't worry you. It's pretty impossible to sleep on your side all night especially with all the fun things pregnancy can throw your way, just sleep how you like in your 1st trimester and most of your second too! I'm currently propped up with cushions in a sitting position to sleep. Tried to go on some and pelvis went a bit nuts. Honestly, just get sleep when and how you can!

@MimiDaisy11 I ended up preferring sleeping on my side! So many nights folded into a pregnancy pillow, unable to roll... we ended up switching sides of the bed so I can sleep on my left side and face towards the wall! It felt natural after so many months.

Midwife told me not to sleep on back from 16 weeks, as weight of uterus/baby etc can press on one of the (main?) veins.

However she also said if I woke up and found myself on my back, to not worry and just roll over onto my side.

Apparently left side is best but go with how you feel most comfortable. I used one of those long body pillow things which really helped, but if you can't get one, a pillow between the knees when
side-sleeping is helpful
