Unpasteurised gruyere cheese?!

So according to the NHS website all hard cheese is fine to eat, but I bought some gruyere today from waitrose and it has a warning on the back saying not suitable for pregnant women due to it not being pasteurised. I thought all hard cheese was fine pasteurised or not?!

I am going to cook with it so it’s fine as I know it’s ok if it’s hot, but I just wondered if this is just over the top labelling?!

I’m one of those people who loves to nibble on cheese / whatever I’m cooking with while I’m making a meal and I’m now having a bit of a crisis where I really want to eat a bit of the cheese uncooked but is it risky?

Just wondered mumsnet’s thoughts on this matter!

I would do what the cheese says... 🤷🏻‍♀️ they wouldn't put a warning on for no reason

I purchased the exact same cheese and noticed the warning on the back! Asked my midwife and she said to go with NHS advice and as it is a hard cheese, unpasteurized is fine!

I would eat it - the risk of listeria is small and it's hard cheese so surely more difficult for stuff to grow/breed.

@Moorelewis Ah interesting! Thank you for letting me know!

In the end I didn’t eat any uncooked as I’d never forgive myself, but I DO think this warning is totally OTT and stupid! It kind of made me want to eat it just to prove a point 😂

Maybe the pregnancy hormones are getting to me but it really annoys me when they just slap a warning on everything to cover themselves even if it’s not correct xx

@Cafeaulait27 it is really silly and anxiety inducing! We already have enough things to worry about during pregnancy. I'd already eaten about half of it before I checked with my midwife. I was literally worrying sick!
