TMI alert

Can't believe I'm about to post this online, but has anyone else had severe constipation during pregnancy? I'm coming up for 12 weeks

The past week I've struggled to go and today I've been having really bad stomach cramps on and off all day where I've had to dash upstairs. But nothing!

I'm in quite a bit of pain, what can be done?

So far I've taken lactulose and drank some green tea.

Thanks in advance. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Fybogel.

You can take it daily and it is safe to use in pregnancy.
Prunes & Lentils (not together) also work well.

Youdontknowwhatyoureonabout · 17/04/2021 20:45

Lactulose is more a lubricant tbh.

PinkCookie11 · 17/04/2021 20:48

I had same went to docs and they gave me laxatives.

Penny2020 · 17/04/2021 20:54

Prunes prunes and more prunes. I was doubled over in pain at 12 weeks too, but prunes and prune juice sorted me out. They taste disgusting, but did the job

missrose0110 · 17/04/2021 21:50

Thank you everyone. Glad to hear it's pretty normal.

@Penny2020 I've been doubled over in pain too, isn't it horrific! I'll send my fiancé for some prune juice for me in the morning!

@Youdontknowwhatyoureonabout I'll try that, I didn't know it was safe. I've googled Senna and dulcolax and neither of them are. Forgot about fybogel!

@PinkCookie11 thanks, if I can't sort it myself I'll deffo be going to the doctors, it's so uncomfortable 😣

Yes this happened to me, I had to stop taking the pregnacare as I think it was the iron that was doing it. Ever since I stopped taking it and just vit D and folic acid and was fine ever since

I really struggled and end up taking andrews salts. I read the PIL which states:

For Magnesium sulphate no clinical data on exposed pregnancies are available.

Animal studies do not indicate direct or indirect harmful effects with respect to pregnancy, embryonal/foetal development, parturition or postnatal development.

Caution should be exercised when recommending to pregnant women.

Fresh orange juice with bits
All bran
Lentil soup
Lots of water

My sympathies, I’m 5 days postpartum and enjoying being able to poop again 😂

I've had macrogol prescribed pretty much throughout this pregnancy now 33 weeks
Currently got the laxido brand which is an unpleasant orange flavour
Previously had a generic one which was lemon ... I'd say the orange is marginally better

SingingWaffleDoggy · 17/04/2021 22:03

Laxido- mix up with orange juice with bits
Califig Syrup- surprisingly tasty
Snack on prunes/ dried apricots

Mysa74 · 17/04/2021 22:12

I can recommend a handful of Tesco value/miss Molly midget gem sweets, repeat as necessary. Taste much better than laxitives, they work nicely and are much less embarrassing to to buy....

AntiHop · 17/04/2021 22:19

Movicol every day.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 17/04/2021 22:21

This is TMI but if it's stuck, you can put a (clean) finger up your vagina and help massage the poo out. I read this tip on here years ago and used it more than once when pregnant.

lamptastic · 18/04/2021 20:19

You might also benefit from a suppository (rectally) if thr stool is particularly firm and painful to pass.

The oral stuff with no doubt help but if you are very full down below you'll need a bit of extra help to get the initial firm stuff to pass.

Tibtab · 18/04/2021 20:20

I have fybogel twice a day, it’s cheaper to get the packs of 30

missrose0110 · 18/04/2021 20:31

Thank you everyone. I'm sure I'll use these tips if I find myself in this position again. It's nice to hear I'm not the only one who's been here, I was a bit embarrassed posting at first.

For now my problem has been resolved, I drank lots of water, ate a couple of bananas, had lactulose and drank green tea and it worked!

Thanks everyone 💓
