Pregnancy of unknown location

Hey ladies,

I would just like some advice or reassurance from somebody who’s been in the same situation..
I found out I was pregnant 23rd March, last period was 21st February. I had a small bleed on 25th March which lasted 1 day and wasn’t heavy enough to fill a pad.

I called 111 for advice and they advised me to go to my local early pregnancy unit for a scan.. Based on period I should have been 4 weeks but nothing could be seen on the scan so it was classed as a pregnancy of unknown location. They took my HCG levels and they were only 16.5 so very low. I wasn’t called back for a repeat blood test as they expected this to end in miscarriage due to the low levels, I was advised to take another pregnancy test in 3 weeks and if it was still positive to go back in for a scan.

So 3 weeks went by, in which time I have had pregnancy symptoms like sore boobs, nausea, fatigue & frequent urination. I retested and I got another positive, even darker than my original test. I went back into the EPU for another scan but they couldn’t find anything yet again, I haven’t had any pain, tenderness or bleeding since.. after a while this was found on the transvaginal scan (see pic attached) on my first scan report it said “gestational sac: absent” and on my second it says “gestational sac: uncertain” and the impression states “probable early normally sited pregnancy.” They explained the possibility of a failed pregnancy but can’t completely exclude an ectopic pregnancy but no obvious ectopic was seen on the scan. My HCG levels on the same day had sky rocketed to 3244. I am due back in next Thursday for another scan.

If anyone has been in a similar situation please share your stories. I am preparing myself for the worst but I am still clinging onto the little hope I have left. Thank you 🙏🏼

It could still be too early for anything to show on the scan. Going by your LMP you would be 7+5 weeks today but it's normal for their to be a difference of (I believe) up to 2 weeks. So say you are just under 6 weeks, you wouldn't necessarily see anything on a scan. That would also explain why your hcg levels were so low at the original blood test but have raised nicely.

I know it's easier said than done but try not to panic now, the stronger test and your hcg numbers are positive! Are they planning on rescanning you in a couple of weeks or anything? If not, I would be looking to book a private scan. The waiting is torture but you're not ruled out yet, try to keep positive!

What date did you have your first blood draw and then the most recent? Hcg is supposed to double every 48 hours, have you worked out where it should be?

Sorry you’re going through this uncertainty x

Hey ladies

Thank you for your replies, it means the world having somebody to talk to..

I am due back for another scan next Thursday which will be one week on from the one I had yesterday.

The first hcg blood draw was taken on 26th March & the result was only 16, yesterday’s was 3244. They sounded very optimistic based on the blood results but then not so much when I had the scan. It’s all very disheartening, one minute feeling such a relief then to be left feeling deflated. Praying for some good results on my next scan. Thanks again for your replies x

Sorry to say this but with hcg supposed to be doubling I would have thought your hcg level would be over 15,000 by now based on the first draw, but I’m definitely not an expert. Is there any chance you miscarried and this is a new pregnancy? When is your next scan?

Chica1990 · 17/04/2021 00:18

Also are you having another blood test tomorrow?

dominiquew · 17/04/2021 01:16

@Chica1990 no chance of it being a new pregnancy, and they haven't scheduled me back in for another blood test. My next scan is on Thursday next week x

I went through this in December. I had an empty gestational sac. No idea how far along I was but in essence the pregnancy had stopped at some point but my body hadn't realised it so was still getting symptoms and positive tests. I miscarried a month from the first scan.

Hopefully your situation will be different but that was my experience.

Good luck

@Allthingspeaches thanks for your reply, I have kinda prepared myself for the worst news so will find out next week. I'm so sorry for your loss x

Sorry you're going through this op. I had a miscarriage just over a month ago - i started bleeding and cramping at about 6 weeks and went in for a scan where I was told it was a pregnancy of unknown location and I had to go in for blood tests to see what my levels were doing. At first they went up to around 3000 and then they started to drop, until eventually after about two weeks I had much more bleeding over a couple of days and then had a final blood test which showed I wasn't pregnant anymore. The whole process probably took about 3 weeks x
