Currently pregnant with baby boy, husband is obsessed with the name Bruce. I am undecided, rest of the family hate it. Interested in opinions. I’m not precious.

I hate it. Go for it if you like it. People get used to names and like the name if they like the person.

SalaciousCrumble · 16/04/2021 18:01

I like it! Also Arnold (Arnie). Good strong 80s/90s action stars names. Perhaps Jean-Claude or Chuck might be pushing it though...

easterndreaming · 16/04/2021 18:05

Hate it

KirstenBlest · 16/04/2021 18:09

It's fine.

Sleepisoverrated150 · 16/04/2021 18:11

I quite like it, I wouldn’t use it myself but I don’t hate it. Maybe use it as a middle name?

ElizabethTudor · 16/04/2021 18:11

Good name for a dog 🐶

Tinkling · 16/04/2021 18:12

lol @ g’day! I concur.

netstaller · 16/04/2021 18:13

Awful

osbertthesyrianhamster · 16/04/2021 18:13

Sorry, but I think it sounds harsh and unpleasant to the ear. Not a fan.

turkeyboots · 16/04/2021 18:14

Big Springsteen Fan? Otherwise no.

LunaNorth · 16/04/2021 18:14

To my ear it’s always sounded like a vaguely insulting adjective.

‘It’s not that I don’t like him, it’s just that he’s a bit...bruce.’

Lulu1919 · 16/04/2021 18:14

Not a name I'd chose

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 16/04/2021 18:15

I know two dogs called Bruce. Don’t even really like it on them.

Definitely don’t tell people the name in advance. They feel it’s a chance to persuade you to change your mind.

LunaNorth · 16/04/2021 18:15

Italics fail.

How bruce of me.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 16/04/2021 18:15

It’s too close to ‘brute’ I think.

ImAbsolutelyTwatted · 16/04/2021 18:16

All I can think of is Bruce Bogtrotter! Grin

SciFiScream · 16/04/2021 18:17

Guid Scots first name and surname. Love it. Think it has a tartan? Important family name here.

FrippEnos · 16/04/2021 18:17

If your DH is a big python fan he could be called Michael Baldwin Bruce.

lovablequalities · 16/04/2021 18:26

I've taught a few. I think in Scotland it is less likely to have the kind of responses you've had here. Just sounds like a normal name to me. But then I also come across plenty wee boys called Colin or Donald or Iain and these kind of names always get aghast reactions on here.

If you like a name and it sounds good to you I say go for it. You can't control other people's reactions. Someone will always consider whatever name you choose as bland/out there/try hard/too modern/too fussy etc etc.

MrsMop1964 · 16/04/2021 18:29

Bruce Lee was my first thought.

Mmn654123 · 16/04/2021 18:45

First through was ‘isn’t it meant to be Caitlin now?’

Mmn654123 · 16/04/2021 18:45

Thought

Sceptre86 · 16/04/2021 18:49

I have heard it a lot in Scotland but I am not that keen.

3CCC · 16/04/2021 20:03

Bruce Bogtrotter
Lovely lad but every 7-10 kid will read/ watch Matilda

Luckyelephant1 · 16/04/2021 20:08

It's not terrible but it is a jokey kind of name. I love it for a dog.

If anyone introduced themselves as Bruce I'd be reminded of the shark from Finding Nemo... 'hello, names Bruce... fish are friends not food...' etc. Or Bruce Bogtrotter.
