I've had 3 miscarriages back to back after my daughter that's 2 now. My doctor said it's probably because I'm to old and that my eggs are to old and bad now.

OP posts:

My mum did. Because... me

cordelia16 · 16/04/2021 14:05

Sorry for your losses. Flowers

I was 34, 38 and 41, respectively, when I got pregnant with my three children. For the youngest, DH and I had unprotected sex one night, thinking my fertility would be less. Clearly was not the case.

EmmaOvary · 16/04/2021 14:13

Please ask to be referred. There are plenty of people in this thread who have had happy outcomes after multiple mc's at your age.

Roomba · 16/04/2021 14:22

You may find this article a bit more reassuring about your eggs, OP:

Why are we still using 300 year old fertility statistics?

I would go back to the GP (preferably a different one at the practice!) and asked to be referred for investigations. My best friend had three miscarriages in 18m during her late 30s. She was referred for further tests and prescribed something (sorry, I've no idea what) that helped her have two children at 40 and 42. I know loads of women who have had children in their 40s, some after miscarriages.

everydaysablessing · 16/04/2021 14:24

I had DD at 40 after two miscarriages, am now 20 weeks pregnant after a further three miscarriages.

So it can happen but it can also bring a lot of heartache.

bishbashbosh99 · 16/04/2021 14:27

I did. It took a year but healthy gorgeous baby now 😄

TrainWhistleChoir · 16/04/2021 14:29

Yes, baby arrived just before my 41st birthday. I'm sure it used to be the case that there were more unplanned pregnancies in over-40s than in under 18s. You're more likely to have twins over 40 too. We have twins in both sides of the family so I'm damned if we're trying again.

Ask for a referral about the miscarriages. That was poor advice from your doctor.

MimiDaisy11 · 16/04/2021 14:30

@idontlikealdi

That sounds like crap advice from your doctor tbh. Of course you can.
"Of course you can" - that's hardly better advice.
ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/04/2021 14:37

How very fucking rude of your doctor! Shock

Yes, I fell pg easily at 39, had DS1 at 40. Then 3 MCs and had DS2 at 45.
I did take vit D (had had it tested and was found to be low - low vit D is associated with both MC and reduced fertility) and was prescribed a progesterone pessary to be used whenever I got a positive pg test. Plus I had to start using clexane pretty much immediately too (I have a clotting disorder, this isn't normal for most people!)

I do recommend vit D supplementation because of the above, and because all the skin cancer advice means that many of the UK population (and in fact the Aussie population too, where I now live) are generally lower in vit D than they should be. I also used Pregnacare vitamin supplements, and an oil supplement too - Equazen mumomega. You might not be too bothered about those, but the vit D is definitely a good option.

I’m sorry for your losses Flowers

What a dismissive thing for your doctor to say.

Many women have children in their late 30s and early 40s. I got pregnant with DC2 first time of trying aged 39 (after struggling to conceive DC1 at 35).

Of course it is possible your miscarriages are linked to your age but it is no way inevitable and further investigation should be possible.

2021mumma · 16/04/2021 14:44

I’m 39 and 20 weeks pregnant. Got pregnant pretty fast, used clearblue ovulation stick, pre-seed. Got pregnant quicker at 39 than I did at 36. Good luck with your ttc journey

CornishGem1975 · 16/04/2021 14:46

Conceived naturally at 39, first month off the pill.

I think it's outrageous is that is what was said to you and I would complain.

Ingridla · 16/04/2021 14:55

I had 3 miscarries and a stillbirth before I successfully had my son aged 38 and 7 months! It can be done but I'm not naive enough to say it's not down to genes where fertility is regarded and I was lucky to have excellent antenatal care at a good hospital in London.

I wish you all the good luck in the world.

Moominmiss · 16/04/2021 15:00

Absolutely it’s still possible to conceive at that age!

I’m 38 and 18 weeks pregnant, will be 39 when this baby is born.

I suffered 4 miscarriages while ttc.

I was told it was likely down to my age and old eggs but equally that it only takes that one healthy egg!

I had various tests done and scans etc with a fertility consultant and all was perfect, as was my partners semen analysis.

I took 200mg ubiqinol a day (the more easily absorbent form of coq10), along with a high dose folic acid and a high dose of vitamin d.

After my fourth miscarriage I did a LOT of research into taking a low dose aspirin to help and vowed that with nothing to lose I would try it next time.

I then took 150mg a day from 1dpo and here I am. My midwife and consultant have both said that had I not been taking it they would have put me on it anyway! It’s shown to help many women who have suffered multiple losses, and there are many threads on here where it’s helped.

Good luck! I was so close to giving up when this pregnancy happened.

Iworry2021 · 16/04/2021 15:13

I know how you feel. I'm a little younger than you, 34. I had my first 8 months ago, conceived within the first month of trying.

Due to my age we're ttc out second now, started at the beginning of this year. I fell pregnant after two cycles, but sadly miscarried very early on, before 5 weeks.

I'm taking all the supplements now that are described in "it starts with the egg". They are actually quite expensive, especially Ubiquinol, but I heard many positive things about it.

I know how hard it is to feel pressure due to your age and think it won't happen for you, but I'm absolutely convinced it will happen for you soon. You already have a child and that shows you're able to get pregnant and have a successful pregnancy.

Even the miscarriages show that you're able to get pregnant, as hard as that sounds. That's how I choose to look at it when I'm having a hard day.

I'm wishing you all the luck in the world and be good to yourself.

Snally82 · 16/04/2021 15:14

I’m 31 weeks pregnant and I’m 39 :) All is well, my pregnancy (so far) has been textbook in all honesty. We did try for bit longer than ‘average’ though and then it happens when we had basically given up!!

jebthesheep · 16/04/2021 15:25

I’m so sorry OP 💐
Your medical history is way more important than age - although age can of course be a factor.
All my sisters and I were late starters - past 40 not unusual in our family. For us it was 50/50 easy vs needing some extra help. Luck of the draw as much as anything - doctor possibly not too interested in this area of medicine and thinks some stats he looked at once tell the whole story. Find a doctor who is inclined to consider a TTC patient as an individual.
Wishing all the best luck to you.

SecretWitch · 16/04/2021 15:30

I’m so sorry for your losses.

I had my third child at age 42. Completely normal pregnancy and delivery.

Good luck, Op💐

ladyofthenorth · 16/04/2021 15:33

So sorry about your miscarriages, its so tough.
We had a miscarriage this time last year , but I am now aged 38 and currently 37 weeks pregnant.
Good luck x

Bu2014 · 16/04/2021 15:33

Currently pregnant with my second, conceived both naturally within the first month of trying for each , aged 37 and now at 44. Good luck 🍀

Chelyanne · 16/04/2021 15:45

Your doctor's a bit of an arse. Miscarriage should not be blamed on maternal age as it can happen to women of any age. You should ask for a referral to recurrent miscarriage team to see if there are other factors causing you issues.

I had 3 mc's in my 20's and 2 in my 30's so far, also had lots of chemicals. We have 5 children from 4 term pregnancies and 22+3wk with our 6th at 36yr. I hate that I'm now seen as an older mother Hmm
Good luck

Noodles4Me · 16/04/2021 15:56

39 here. 21 weeks gone. First attempt. All good so far.

WalkingMeAway · 16/04/2021 17:21

I'm 39 and 28w pregnant with my 3rd baby.

All the best x

bumblingbovine49 · 16/04/2021 17:34

Pregnant at 37 miscarriage. Pregnant again at 39 after almost 18 months of trying again. Then bleeding and resultant scan at 10 weeks revealed one empty sac and one fetus. DS now 16.

When DS was 18 months I had some fertility investigations as I wanted another but was told I had almost no chance of conceiving naturally again as I had no viable eggs . I decided against IVF as it meant doner eggs

In fact I had my last period before my 42 birthday so DS really was probably my last viable egg at 39. Not true for everyone though . My friend had a naturally conceived daughter at 46 years of age. She had undergone several IVF treatments over about 10 years but had given in her early 40s. The pregnancy really was a miracle and also her last viable egg probably as well or at least that is what we joke when we talk about our respective 'miracle' pregnancies

Grimbelina · 16/04/2021 17:41

3 babies after 39 here (and conceived each time within a month of trying). However, I needed extra progesterone so if you are miscarrying then I would get that checked out as soon as you can.

I had also been told in my late thirties that my fertility was so poor (blood tests looked more like someone in their 40's) that I would be unlikely to have children....
