Anyone had a breech baby at 20 week scan but baby flipped before birth?

Yes. It's very common.

Babies move and change position all the time and 20 weeks is only half way. I doubt any baby stays in the same position from 20 weeks until birth. Mine was head down but even I had to have a scan during labour as they thought he'd moved to breech during labour. He hadnt but the fact they thought he had just shows how things change all the time.

Don't worry too much this early, they can turn quite late on.

Had it the other way around, the lower of our twins was hd from 20wk to 32wk and I was all set for a natural delivery as a low lying placenta had moved enough. Went back for my 36wk scan and she'd turned breech and stayed that way so I had elcs 9 days later. The consultant was amazed she'd managed to turn as they were both big babies.

Thesearmsofmine · 15/04/2021 16:02

At 20 weeks baby will be turning regularly. Mine was still turning at 40 weeks.

SunflowerOwl · 15/04/2021 16:04

I had my 20 week scan last week and sonographer said mine was breech but she will move a lot between now and birth so not to worry!

ellenpartridge · 15/04/2021 16:32

Position at 20 weeks is not fixed at all. They won't worry until much much later, probably around 38 weeks.

Poppins2016 · 15/04/2021 16:35

Yep. My first baby was mostly transverse but occasionally breech through most of my second and third trimesters (regular growth scans confirmed what the midwives had already thought). He got himself into position late in the third trimester. I really wouldn't worry about position halfway through, it'll change (often!) between now and giving birth.

WolfMother326 · 15/04/2021 16:52

My baby was breech at the 20 week scan and the sonographer could not get him to move, he was very comfy sitting on his bottom.

Then I had a cervical scan at 22 weeks, and that sonographer kindly let me see the baby for a moment just reassurance. I watched while he did a total backflip, moving from head up to breeched, snuggling up and getting comfy again.

Basically, babies move all the time!

Mine was breech till 28 weeks then she turned head down. Hoping she stays this way

SomewhereInAnotherLife · 15/04/2021 17:31

Yep, me! Breech at 20 weeks is really no cause for concern. Babies wriggle around so much at that gestation. Your baby has got ages yet to get into the optimal birth position.

Aquamarine1029 · 15/04/2021 17:32

Breech at 20 weeks is normal. Babies don't usually turn until much later. I wouldn't be concerned at all.

georgarina · 15/04/2021 22:30

Thanks all :) will have to find something else to stress about

I had the opposite 😁 Head down at 19 weeks, transverse at 22 weeks and breech ever since. I'm now 39 weeks and still breech.

Fullofpudding · 16/04/2021 00:30

My breech DS turned himself at 39 weeks!

hmmperhaps · 16/04/2021 10:58

Very common. Mine was breech much later than this and turned too. But - she then turned transverse (horizontal!) during labour!

Noidea837262 · 16/04/2021 11:32

My youngest was breech at 36 weeks, went back at 38 weeks to check with a view to doing something about it and he had turned. He was born at 39+3 but was back to back then

Omg! Did everything go ok?

@georgarina not really! I was forced to push, despite begging for a c-section at 10cm. Told me I would "110% give birth vaginally" She was pushed lower and got stuck as she didn't turn (and wasn't likely to!) I then had an emergency c-section and they had to make more cuts to my womb to get her out, resulting in me having a major haemorrhage from losing 2.5L of blood and I had to have a transfusion.

ChocOrange1 · 16/04/2021 13:09

20 weeks is super early. I'm surprised the doctor even diagnosed them as "breech" at this point as there's very little chance they will stay in that position.

My daughter was breech and turned at 36 weeks. I felt her turn, it was very weird!

georgarina · 17/04/2021 13:24

@hmmperhaps wow I'm so sorry to hear that Shock I hope everything turned out ok in the end Flowers

@georgarina all fine now and my daughter was fine all the way through. Now a 7 month old who snuck into my bed at 5am!

Congratulations!

Mine flipped at 39 weeks and 3 days!
