Ultrasound worry

Hi all,

I am pregnant with my first baby!! I booked a private scan so my partner could see the scan as he won’t be allowed into my hospital scan due to covid restrictions.
Anyway, going by the dates I thought I was 11+5. However during the scan they could not find the baby when doing an abdominal scan. They then did a transvaginal scan and there was a strong heartbeat but said I was measuring 9+5 (2 weeks behind). They didn’t make much of it but I am freaking out. Not so much that I am measuring two weeks behind but why could they not see anything with an abdominal scan at nearly 10 weeks?? Anyone have a similar experience?
Thanks in advance!

I have a tilted uterus which makes it hard for them to see anything on abdominal ultrasounds so that could be why. It's a bit of a worry that you're measuring 2 weeks behind, I would consider discussing this with the EPU to see what their thoughts are.

Could you have your dates wrong? Do you know which date you ovulated based on either OPKs, BBT or IVF? If not, what date did you get your first positive pregnancy test result?

They struggle with abdominal scans early for me as I have a retroverted uterus that has got worse with each pregnancy. Even TV I have to put clenched fists under my hips for them to get the right angle. It was fine by my dating scan though and they got a clear view with an abdominal, baby was measuring 13wk by then so everything had moved forward.

Chelyanne · 15/04/2021 11:43

I wouldn't worry about measuring behind until you have had another scan showing how it is progressing.

Hjl21 · 15/04/2021 11:46

Omg. Now that you mention the tilted uterus I actually vaguely remember having a smear test a few years ago and she mentioned something similar in relation the cervix so maybe that is it? (Sorry for the TMI)
So I’m sitting here trying to work it out. I wasn’t long after coming off the pill, my cycle was irregular so I couldn’t say when I ovulated but I think it was probably later than day 14. I did a clear blue test, the ones that show the weeks. And judging by that I’m actually bang on 10 weeks today which would explain the measurements.
Thank you for the replies. I am more at ease now after thinking rationally. I have an appointment Monday so hopefully all will be okay!!

In that case it sounds as if you ovulated much later than usual OP, and you shouldn't have anything to worry about with dates. As Chelyanne says, there are other explanations like tilted uterus too which might have made the scan trickier.
Hold on until your next scan and try not to worry! I know easier said than done!

I would try not to worry. Your only 2 weeks behind and at this stage baby's grow at different rates.
Also seems they had issues scanning. As I had bleeding at 9 weeks with my son and they scanned me from my stomach and saw baby (Nhs). It's a very difficult time but please try not to stress c

This happened to me, I got put back by 2 weeks at a dating scan and the pregnancy continued as normal, I just ovulated much later than I thought.

It was a bonus that I got to go back 2 weeks later to do nuchal measurements so got to see baby twice :)

Hjl21 · 15/04/2021 23:12

That’s very reassuring!! Thanks for the reply. Smile

Definitely don't worry about that. As others have said, I have a tilted uterus and had to have my ultrasounds done vaginally until my 12 week one. That's nothing to worry about, as baby grows it moves to a normal position so doesn't affect pregnancy/birth.

From your update I wouldn't be worried about the dates at all. You've probably just ovulated later than day 14 which a lot of people do, especially with not long being off the pill and irregular cycles it would be hard to have it bang on. You might find your dates change again slightly at your NHS 12 week scan but this will be the date they go with.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!🥰
