Tonsilitis/penicillin when pregnant???

Hello,
I wonder if anyone's got any experience of this?

I'm 15 weeks pg and pretty sure I've got tonsilitis - ds1 had it last week and penicillin cleared it up almost straightaway. I've had a sore throat since last week & now got the white 'blobs' on my tonsils/throat.

Is there any point in me trekking again to the doc's? We seem to have lived there lately with ds1&2 being ill - I can't face them wreaking havoc in the waiting room if the doctor can't prescribe anything. (It's so sore at night it's stopping me getting what little sleep I was managing .

Thanks everyone (sorry if this has been done before).

Most of the standard antibiotics are fine when pregnant -- amoxycillin, for example, which is what I normally get for tonsilitis. There are a few that aren't (such as whichever one they normally dish out for UTIs) but even then there's normally a safe antibiotic they can use instead.

So get thee to the doctor...

Second lemonaid...

... I had a chest infection when I was Pregnant, popped to the docs who consulted his drugs manual and found something appropriate!

Just tell them you're pg!

Hope you feel better soon!

What you may be thinking of is that Oxytetracycline used to be a popular antibiotic but must be avoided in pregnancy as is does terrible things to the baby's teeth.

Your GP knows you're pregnant and won't prescribe anything unsuitable - get yourself down there!

I have Amoxycillin when 41+ weeks pregnant for sinusitis, theres plenty of antibiotics that are safe in pregnancy and you can have paracetamol for the pain as well, don't suffer get to the GP.

Thanks for your replies too sweetkitty & fortyplus - this is my 4th pregnancy so I should know better but I've never really been ill before during them - this time it's been one stomach bug after another, then colds/chest infections,it's getting me down....my immune system must be pants at the mo...can't wait to get to the doctor's now

They will only give them to you if its bacterial...sounds like it is.

I was on penicillin when I got pregnant and it got rid of the bacterial stuff but its only just gone and my glands are still up and down at 16wks.

I always ask for a canestan cream for thrush too whenever i get penicillin etc, as i always end up with a bout of it after medication !! LOL.... be prepared.

Doctor said it was viral not bacterial so he couldn't give me anything....shame, just had better suffer then. Hopefully it will soon ease on its own. Tbh, I'm so ecstatic that the all-day nausea (morning sickness - yeah, right) seems to have gone that I'm happy (almost) to put up with a sore throat instead.

Thanks for your replies all.
