5.5 weeks BFP & brown discharge

So sorry for TMI in the title but I’m worried sick and just looking for some advice or reassurance. I’m 5.5 weeks pregnant after mf ivf with icsi so I’m still using oestrogen and progesterone to support the pregnancy.

Ever since I got my positive I’ve had brown discharge (not red or pink, not enough to warrant a pad it’s only when wiping) on and off accompanied by mild cramps occasionally. The clinic said not to worry provided it’s not red but I still can’t help but panic.

I had two beta hcg blood tests last week on Tuesday and Friday and both showed good progress (1681 and 3754 respectively). I’m terrified I’m miscarrying but this has gone on for the last two weeks.... anyone else have experience with it? I feel a bit fobbed off by the clinic and I don’t have my early pregnancy scan until the end of next week and I’m losing my mind!

Fellow IVF’r here!
I had this and everything was fine! And it was also at the same time as you!

After everything to do with IVF things like this hit you like a bag of shit! As you say as long as not red and filling a pad you’ll be ok!

Your HCG numbers are really good!!

Look up implantation bleeding, happens in about 20 of healthy pregnancies, it’s very likely this Smile cramping is also common as the egg gets burrowed in and settles, there’s a lot going on in there. In my healthy pregnancy I had stabbing pains in my left ovary for nearly 10 weeks. Hopefully everything will be ok Flowers

SeaTurtles92 · 12/04/2021 18:59

Not IVF. I had bright red bleeding at 12 weeks and no one would see me so had to go private. My NHS scan was only four days away but I couldn't wait the whole weekend with worry.

Everything was fine, they didn't know why it happened they said it just could be one of those things.

It's a good sign it is brown and could be implantation bleeding.

Good luck with your pregnancy and I hope things go nice and smoothly for you.

Thanks @PinkCookie11 you’ve already made me feel a ton better! The paranoia after the gruelling process is probably the worst part. Did you ever find out what caused yours?

Thank you for your kind messages @SeaTurtles92 & @BuffaloCauliflower, forgive my ignorance but doesn’t implantation bleeding occur really early on, just before you find out you’re pregnant kinda thing?

Feeling calmer already, so pleased I messaged on here as I was a bit hesitant given the gross info 😂 thanks again all of you xx

It was put down as blood from implantation as it was brown so old blood.
They got me in for a scan but there was nothing to see other than the sac etc and they couldn’t find where it would have came from.
Went in for 7 week scan and the heartbeat was there.
So don’t be disheartened they won’t see you and there isn’t a lot to see right now.
It’s very common and esp in IVF!

brushlaptop · 12/04/2021 19:41

I had this and everything was fine, now 13+3 with a girl!

BuffaloCauliflower · 12/04/2021 19:51

Implantation bleeding is usually around 4-5 weeks. The egg doesn’t implant immediately on fertilisation Smile

As far as I'm aware it can be around 5 ish weeks. My sister recently had it and was scared. She went for a scan and they could only see a sac went back two weeks later and they could see the baby. They put hers down to implantation bleeding and she was around 5 weeks then. She thought she was further along then she actually was.
Emmalouise11 · 12/04/2021 20:10

@Ivfgottahope. Congratulations!!
I was the same as you, started having brown discharge not long after I found out my ivf worked and I think it stopped roughly when I was around 8-9 weeks, also had a little bleed aswell, they couldn’t see where it came from on scans though so was told not to worry, but all was fine currently 15 weeks now. ☺️

Missingthebridegene · 12/04/2021 20:14

I had this between 5 and 6 weeks-brown and dark red blood when wiping alongside tummy ache and back ache. I was convinced I was miscarrying but it turns out she was just nestling in even further. Could you have a private reassurance scan earlier? I ended up having a scan at the early pregnancy unit and they couldn't pick up a heartbeat with the tummy ultrasound so they did an internal one and picked it up then x sending love OP and crossing everything for you xx

Ivfgottahope · 13/04/2021 14:57

Thank you so much everyone, I’ve booked in for a another hcg test tomorrow so it should at least show whether things are progressing despite this bleeding. I thought about an early scan as I hit the 6 week mark on Thursday but if they don’t detect a heartbeat it may push my anxieties about this over the edge so I’ll wait until next week for when I’m booked in.

Gosh, throughout the whole of last year when all ivf treatments were cancelled followed by a sequence of f ups by the clinic once it did, I truly thought the end goal was a BFP yet I’ve not been able to enjoy a single second since I got it. I truly hope tomorrow brings some good news x

You’ve done the right thing regarding an early scan! 7 weeks is a lot clearer.
IVF is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, the anxiety doesn’t go away until they are born.
Get your midwife to add to your notes that it’s an IVF baby and you have anxiety.
I done this and it helped me without even knowing during labour from the docs reading it and putting me at ease during certain situations.
Good luck I’m sure everything will be fine!

MabelG · 13/04/2021 15:21

@Ivfgottahope I'm also pregnant following IVF. How much progesterone have they got you on and could you ask them to test that too? Also the pessaries can cause some spotting due to irritating the cervix.

My clinic wasn't too concerned about brown blood as it's old blood. Good luck with your HCG test xx

Ivfgottahope · 13/04/2021 15:31

Thanks @PinkCookie11, I will do. This is a multitude of firsts for me so I’m navigating the whole process blindly. That’s really helpful

@MabelG I’m on two pessaries of 400mg cyclogest a day which I put up the back package! I thought they may be the cause of the spotting but I made the switch last week and it’s still continuing 🤷🏻‍♀️

OP posts:
MabelG · 13/04/2021 15:40

@Ivfgottahope they had me on 400mg although the front door only type! It transpired that I wasn't absorbing them well (some people don't) and I needed the injections as well. Maybe worth asking them to check your levels at the same time as the HCG? If I remember correctly a progesterone blood test is about £40. It might not be that but worth ruling out

Ivfgottahope · 13/04/2021 16:11

Thank you, I’ll try to push for that too. I just did a hpt and the pregnancy line is so strong it made the control line really faint! I’m 21DP5DT. Hopefully this is just something of nothing, I won’t be able to sleep tonight ahead of tomorrow. I’ve never been a worrier like this before!

Ivfgottahope · 16/05/2023 12:07

Of sorts…. I was pregnant with twins. Miscarried one and currently have a boisterous healthy 18 month old DD xx
