Hi everyone, I think I’m maybe looking for a bit of reassurance. We had a scan yesterday at a private clinic for gender (it’s a boy 💙) but when I got home and was looking at the photos the lady took of the brain I’m terrified maybe his little brain hasn’t developed properly. In one photo it looks normal and in another it looks like a hole. Any advice would be so appreciated - my anomaly scan isn’t until 7th May

If they noticed anything out of the norm they would have told you. They will check baby in detail at your anomaly scan.

Hey sorry for the sorry this has caused you. Was it a medical private scan? You could give them a call for reassurance xx

Cafeaulait27 · 12/04/2021 08:48

Sorry for the worry*

It'll be fine. The sonographer would have noticed immediately if there was something wrong. And you have to remember this is layers and layers of you and it's constantly moving so it's hard to get photos without things like that showing.

Js1116 · 12/04/2021 08:55

Thank you all for getting back to me. This is our rainbow baby and I really thought after 12 weeks the worrying would stop - it definitely hasn’t!
I didn’t think about the layers etc when taking the scan. I did ask the lady if everything looked healthy and she said everything looked good to her but they would check in more detail at my 20 week scan. It was an ultrasound direct clinic. I would hope they would refer me back to the hospital if there was something wrong with his brain

Honestly it's fine :)

Hi OP, the first photo you’ve posted is of the head and brain, but the second isn’t, it’s a cross section of his abdomen. If you look it says AC, which is abdominal circumference, and you can see his spine at one side. The hole you’ve spotted looks like it’s just his stomach.

That said if you’ve worried definitely give the clinic a ring to chat through it, they should be able to reassure you!

3rdtimemomma · 12/04/2021 09:08

The one with the "hole" is the abdomen and it's meant to have the "hole" if you look the first pic is the head which looks normal ( I'm no professional) but looks fine! And the second if you look says AC which is abdominal circumference so that is the abdomen! Please don't worry! 🥰

Js1116 · 12/04/2021 09:23

Oh my goodness I’m so glad I posted this, I’m so silly! Thank you for getting back to me, I can’t believe i didn’t notice it was his stomach 🙈 thank you all for reassuring me! Xx

OP I was also going to say the second pic is the abdominal area and looks normal just based on scans I have seen of my own baby (again I am not a professional but recognised that as the stomach area and had noticed "holes" myself)

Js1116 · 12/04/2021 09:29

@ElderMillennial thank you! You can tell I’m a first time mum, I haven’t much of a clue when it comes to this stuff 😂 x

Most people wouldn't know, OP. I only know because I have regular scans with a consultant and she explains what she's looking at.

3rdtimemomma · 12/04/2021 09:43

Your not silly at all! We all worry and look into things and get ourselves into some right panics!!

We have all been there xx

Js1116 · 12/04/2021 09:45

Aw thank you all again, it’s so lovely to be able to come on here and ask for advice / reassurance! No doubt I would have worried myself silly, but now I can relax and get excited for my little boy 💙 xx

I find ultrasounds have a lot of random holes in them but tbh I haven’t asked what they are because I presume they will notice if it’s not normal. Try not to worry and confirmations on your baby boy Flowers our one at 8 weeks had holes in it’s head so it looked like :)

comgratulations ^

Don't feel silly for worrying- part and parcel of becoming a parent in my experience! If it helps I work in a neuro service in the NHS, and seeing black areas like that can be completely normal- even in fully grown adults! (I had an MRI head scan for research purposes about 10 years ago and there were plenty of black spaces on those scan images too, I like to think I'm relatively intact and normal 😉). In layman's terms the scanning method used to create the image impacts on how the picture looks on screen, black space doesn't mean there's nothing there or that it's abnormal. 😊 And as others have said if the sonographer saw anything that concerned them they would have been obliged to tell you. X

@Js1116 this is part and parcel of being a mum! All the worry...

Congratulations though! It's an exciting time xx
