I had my 36 week growth scan yesterday and baby is measuring at 7lb1 already. I'm Type 1 Diabetic but feeling awful blaming myself.

I've got a consultation on Tuesday to discuss birth plan, I am swaying towards ELCS for a mixture of reasons. Whether it's ELCS or induction, it'll be no later than 38 weeks due to Diabetes.

Just wondering if anyone is/ has been in the same boat and baby has been smaller? Or Type 1's, what did they say in terms of your birth plan? I feel really anxious about the consultation next week! My midwife told me to stand my ground for an ELCS but I'm not sure what level of resistance I'll get from the consultant...

Xx

Some women just have bigger babies it might not be due to the diabetes at all, please try not to blame yourself. Someone I knew had a 10lb 9oz baby at 39 weeks by ELCS with no diabetes or any known reason.

I don’t have diabetes but I did have loads of growth scans. Take them with a pinch of salt, you have variability by about 1lb each way. So your baby is somewhere between 6lb1 to 8lb1. Eldest came out 7oz heavier than predicted and youngest was spot on the predicted weight.

If you want a ELCS ask for it. Some consultants are quite happy to agree and others need a bit of a nudge. Good luck!

The weight estimates can be out by as much as 25% so try not to worry about that too much. On the elcs front, if your consultant refuses they have to refer you to someone who will do it for you.

I've had big babies, no diabetes I just grow them big. Our 2nd was off the charts for growth and 4wk ahead from 28wk, came out 10lb 12oz at 40+5 with just 15 mins unassisted pushing. Big babies don't always mean a tough VB.

Thank you both. I've had a few unhelpful comments from family that I should maybe have cut out carbs completely, or it must be down to what I'm eating 🙄 made the guilt go through the roof xx
