Brushing my teeth makes me so sick, I’m 15 weeks and so sick today since brushing my teeth this morning 😟 what’s the link between toothpaste and sickness in pregnancy x

For me, it was just the texture in my mouth (I sometimes gag from foamy toothpaste normally; it was much worse with pregnancy making my gag reflex really sensitive). No solution, but sending sympathy. I think I just changed to a different brand of toothpaste that frothed less, but couldn't remember which one.

If you also struggle with taking tablets, I found it much easier to take them with a yoghurt drink (Actimel or something) rather than water.

I think it's the strong minty taste, I head it when I wad pregnant with my son until I was 20 weeks. I switched to a kid's toothpaste with fluoride that was bubblegum flavoured if I remember rightly and that was much much better. I would occasionally try normal toothpaste again to see if I could use it and it kept making me sick until 20 weeks.

I used to visualise I was on an iceberg and licking ice when I brushed my teeth. Sounds weird but it seemed to keep the gagging at bay for a few extra seconds.

I used to brush my teeth in the kitchen with a sick basin the room as the toilet used to make me heave then the toothbrush made me gag if the toothpaste didn’t. Most upsetting that a simple task became so sick inducing. Also if anyone made a smell in toilet that set me off too.
Been pregnant 4 times, never changed. Even now my mouth is watering and not in a good way

dementedpixie · 04/04/2021 17:14

It wasnt the toothpaste for me, it was the toothbrush itself that made me gag

BertieBotts · 04/04/2021 17:16

I think it was the brush being too close to the back of my mouth for me, so when I brushed my back teeth, even though that isn't very close.

Boredof2020 · 04/04/2021 17:18

For me if I brushed them later I would be ok. The first hour or so getting up, was of course throwing up!

I'm on my second HG pregnancy and I think it's a combination of things for me. Firstly just the feelings of having things in my mouth, both the frothy liquidy mess of the toothpaste and the toothbrush moving around. Then secondly it's the minty taste of the toothbrush. I have to quit while I'm ahead so can't brush for a full two minutes or I vomit and I also have to focus really hard on something else, if I'm deeply absorbed in thought for a minute or so I realise I don't feel like I'm about to vomit - until I've realised it and then I instantly do and need to stop or I vomit! It's horrible.

Can’t believe how many of us are struggling with something that we would never even think twice about as part of our daily routines.

I’ve been using kids toothpaste for the past few weeks and it’s been better but today I was stupid enough to switch to adult one thinking maybe the toothpaste related sickness had gone.

Back to kids toothpaste from tomorrow, it doesn’t clean as effectively but I plan to get a nice scale and polish when this is all over x

God yes it was hideous! I could only use little kids toothpaste that was berry flavour. Probably not ideal but better than not using toothpaste at all.

Worriesome · 04/04/2021 23:08

It’s sickening isn’t it @HollyBollyBooBoo I’m still feeling like crap and worried it won’t go away. I was really hoping nausea would be gone by now 😕

I thought it was just me! It happened in both my pregnancies. I didn't find a solution beyond the second brushing being easier to tolerate, so brush then vom then brush.

UnderHisAye · 04/04/2021 23:18

It wasn't the toothpaste for me, it was looking down the plughole! I could just about handle it if I left the bathroom while brushing and looked away while I had to be at the sink.

TLxx · 05/04/2021 02:52

I had the same thing a few weeks ago. I thought it was just me!! I changed six different toothpastes, thee mouthwash but my mum found the fix.

Aldi sells a coconut toothpaste. It's the ONLY thing I can use now! Hope this helps xx
