Currently 32 weeks with 3rd child and have been diagnosed with group b strep.... already had a bit of a stressful pregnancy and just haven't felt right for weeks, anyone else had a similar situation? Also do you think I Would be induced early? Any information anyone has would be great!!

Is group B strep is something that can lie dormant for ages so you could have it show on a swab one day then gone the next and has absolutely no ill effects on mum.It isn’t an infection that makes you ill but it can be passed you the baby during Labour so you’ll need IV antibiotics whilst in Labour to cover baby. No need for induction, in my trust women with group B strep as still suitable for the low risk unit but just require the antibiotics during Labour.

1 in 4 pregnant women would be found to have group b strep if they tested everyone - in the huge majority of cases it causes no effect at all. And by the time you go into labour there's a chance (I think 15% chance) that it will be dormant again. I turned down antibiotics when in labour because I didn't want to mess up my baby's gut bacteria unless necessary. The hospital offered strep B monitoring instead which was just then taking my baby's temperature every 3 hours for the first 18 hours after birth.

I had this in my second pregnancy - tested positive for it at 9 weeks.
I had antibiotics in labour and baby was monitored on the ward for the night but no problems or anything.

I meant to add that it's not something that will affect you or your baby while you are pregnant, it can just pass on to your baby of you have a vaginal birth.

Hi this came up in active so thought I’d reply. I had strep b in my second pregnancy, I’d never heard of anyone with it before and had only heard scare stories in the media, so I know it can be worrying. I had IV antibiotics in later stages of labour and all was fine. I also had to have antibiotics after delivery. Now have a healthy 9 year old, so please don’t worry.

No you definitely won't be induced early as whilst in the womb, it's no danger to baby. It comes and goes so one day you can have it and the next week not. However all they'll do is give you antibiotics during labour and some to baby when they're born. Simple as that. Nothing to panic about

I've had this in 4 pregnancies

With my 3rd child she become very poorly with sepsis and nearly died as a result of strep B

We was given antibiotics but it didn't work that occasion so yes it can be dangerous!

My other children was lucky and didn't get ill from it

I had groub b strep with my 3rd child, a week after birth me and my son were in hospital very sick with sepsis I know it affects babies in more cases then it does the mother
I didn’t have antibiotics because my labour was very quick in the back of the ambulance, when my son was born he was so jittery, his whole body shook uncontrollably every health professional that seen him noticed it but did nothing about it and we weren’t given antibiotics after birth either.
most posts I’ve seen people were treated with antibiotics and monitored for 12 hours after we wasn’t and my baby lost a whole pound in a week, no one told me that it could cause poor feeding, that is why we were readmitted
while in hospital I fell really ill couldn’t pick my head up all my muscles felt weak and they tested me for everything, i feel like no one read my notes that said groub b strep or they might have found out what was wrong sooner, found a shadow on my brain so I was treated for sepsis and meningitis immediately after that, but my son wasn’t treated until days after me, point to the story I’m pregnant again and I’m absolutely terrified, the hospital I was in were so unprepared and didn’t seem to have a clue what was going on with me or my son.. I have completely lost trust in my midwife’s and my local hospital and it’s making me so paranoid about this pregnancy more so because they never treated my son for 1 week and 4 days after his birth 3 days after the day we was admitted and even though he was losing weight rapidly they never gave him a feeding tube till day 4 after being readmitted?
Has anyone else been through something like this?
