Pregnancy of unknown location

Hi everyone,

Long story short got a positive pregnancy test on 16/03 began bleeding 17/03 up until 25/03. Very light bleed ranging in colour brown, dark brown, dark red, sort of orangey and then dark brown when it tapered off. From my LMP I’m dated 6ish weeks however my partner works away and I was tracking ovulation so I am 110% about my dates which would make me 4 weeks. I’ve had two ultrasounds showing nothing (which I’ve expected as it’s early days).

Today I was told I have a pregnancy of unknown location and was given info on methotrexate. On Tuesday my HCG was 81 on Thursday it was 91 so a small rise. I was warned this could be indicator of ectopic. Today my HCG is 138 and has risen by 48%. I was offered the route of methotrexate on the phone but I said I would rather repeat bloods in 48 hours as I have no pains, no bleeding etc (obviously if this was to change I’d head straight to a&e). I just have a gut feeling that they’re wrong and I just won’t forgive myself if I let this pregnancy go without a fight.

Has anyone experienced this and had a positive outcome? I know I’m probably in total denial and I’ll need to do what’s best for me health wise as I have an almost 5 year old who is my whole world. Just wondered if anyone has experienced this and had success? Or i’ll even take the not so successful stories as I really need to make a decision ASAP as time is not of the essence if it could turn into a medical emergency.

Thanks for reading x

Sorry you are going through this OP. I had an ectopic pregnancy a few years ago, and lost my right tube. My bleeding ranged in colour like yours but it never stopped. I was about 5 weeks when it happened and they noticed a mass near my ovary as soon as they scanned me and my HCG levels were mich higher than yours. I wouldn't want to have methotrexate unless they were certain it was ectopic. How long would it take you to get to A&E if you were to start bleeding and have pain? Have they agreed to repeat the bloods in 48 hours?

I had a suspected ectopic pregnancy not long after the first. I had pain, and bleeding, and again nothing could be seen on the first scan. They said until my HCG level was 2000 they weren't concerned about not being able to see anything. They worked out roughly when they should have risen to 2000 and brought me back for a scan then. Where they confirmed the pregnancy was in the right place.

Hope everything turns out to be ok.

Hi op, I'm sorry you're going through it. I had a pregnancy of unknown location last year. It was very draining! Going by your bloods, it's very unlikely that this is a viable pregnancy I would say. However, I'm surprised they've offered methotrexate so quickly! I had bloods done every 48 hours for 2 weeks before I was given methotrexate. Same as you, my hcg was going up but barely and nothing visible anywhere on a scan.
Really hope you get some answers soon xx

@NameChange74567 @lockdownbabyx

Thank you both for commenting and sharing your stories I am sorry for both of your losses ❤️.

My last MP was 08/02 and I was tracking ovulation that peaked on 25/02. My partner works away as he is in the military so I am certain of my conception dates as we DDD 26/27/28 as that’s when he was home so I suspect I conceived around then or shortly after. My periods are all over the place ranging in 27-35 days since my MC in May 2020. I got my first positive on 16/03 which was so faint it was barely visible now they’re really positive in your face lines!! I began to bleed brown blood on 17/03 had some minor cramping and bled on and off for 8 days. I had an ultrasound at EPU and they dated me 6 weeks from LMP even though I know I am only just hitting around 4 weeks. Nothing was seen as suspected and my HCG was 81 then 48 hours later 91 obviously not an ideal increase at all. Today I had another ultrasound nothing to be seen in uterus and tubes appear to be clear at this stage so was told I have a pregnancy of unknown location and was given a leaflet on methotrexate. I had my levels taken again and they are now 138 and have risen by 48% which is still off target as it’s meant to be 60%. However the midwife on the phone said the consultant was happy to administer methotrexate or monitor me and keep checking my levels. I’ve opted to go back on Monday 48hours later for more bloods as I don’t feel it’s right to not give this pregnancy a chance as I still think it’s really early days. I have a son who is almost 5 and I’m only 24 so I am not wanting to risk my health at all nor do I want to loose a tube. I am going to have a conversation with them again on Monday ask all my questions and reexplain my dating of things and ask how long I have to play about with to wait to see if my levels do start to double the way they should and for a pregnancy to be identified on the scan. My only issue is I don’t want to wait too long and end up rupturing however, I truly feel in my heart of hearts I need to give this pregnancy at least another week at the most maybe even two if that’s possible. My bleeding has tapered off and I have just normal discharge now, I have no pains or aches etc in my stomach or shoulder and just have no cause for concern at this stage.

Hoping to get more clarification on Monday as I definitely think it’s too early to administer methotrexate ☹️ xx

How did you get on today OP?

CroydianSlip · 29/03/2021 17:31

I had PUL and methotrexate before all my DC. I was hesitant to have the methotrexate and so the consultant looked at my other hormone levels with me to demonstrate it was not an ongoing pregnancy which helped me.. Could you ask that?

Sorry you're experiencing this.

user1473880439 · 29/03/2021 18:28

@NameChange74567 my levels have increased from 138 to 196 (43% increase) which is not what they’re looking for as they are looking for a 60% rise. I spoke with consultant who said he is happy to do what suits me such as ride it out, monitor me and see if my levels decrease on their own. He said I could be a slow riser but he could not guarantee the viability of this pregnancy. I’ve again been offered the injection of methotrexate which I think unfortunately I am going to have to take as I really can’t risk emergency surgery. My head is all over the place ☹️ Xx

@CroydianSlip that’s a good idea I will request this tomorrow when they phone. It looks like I am going to have to book in for methotrexate. How was your experience with this as I am a bit apprehensive? Xx

I'm sorry OP, for what it's worth I personally didn't have any of the side affects after having the methotrexate. Didn't even feel the injection, I felt like I had been booted in the leg after but that's it. The only downside of course is you have to wait 3 months before trying to conceive again. Wishing you the best of luck with everything x
