Previous ectopic now I'm pregnant?

Hi I previously had an ectopic pregnancy in July last year. I have now found out I'm pregnant again, my last period was just over 3 weeks ago and I've had 8 positive home tests over the last two days.

I phoned my doctor to make an appt and they are going to give me a phone consultation in a few weeks time. Will I be entitled to an early scan?

Also, I experienced cramping and spotting, brown discharge a couple days ago. Is this normal?

I'm really paranoid about it this time round because of what happened last time. This is my second child.

Yeah you should be referred to early pregnancy for a scan at around 6 weeks or so to check baby is where they should be.

Congratulations Grin

Chelyanne · 24/03/2021 11:02

They should send you for an early scan to check the location of the pregnancy.
I have seen some posting on here claiming that they were told they were not eligible for an early scan after ectopic if not showing signs of problems. Be firm about wanting one if they don't offer it initially.

yellowbeaker · 24/03/2021 11:04

I had an ectopic about 10 years ago and am pg again. When I called my GP/Midwife I was told I could only have a scan if I had symptoms which really upset me as the last ectopic was very traumatic!
I ended up booking a private scan for 7 weeks through window to the womb and it was all fine. They were really nice to me and so kind. Just an option for you if your local hosp is like mine. The scan wasn't too expensive- about £70

PrincessConsuela12 · 24/03/2021 11:09

I had an ectopic in 2018, when I got pregnant again in 2019 I had an early scan (around 6 weeks) and bloods.

Given how serious an ectopic can be I'd definitely push for a scan.

Good luck Thanks

alexio · 24/03/2021 11:23

You definite should get a scan I had an ectopic in 2018, fell pregnant in 2019 got a scan and then had a 2nd pregnancy in 2020 and got an early scan again.

If you've ever had an ectopic and become pregnant again you should be getting a scan each time to confirm placement as you are at risk of another ectopic

Thank you. Do you mind answering if the pregnancy went ok?

That's amazing. So glad everything is fine for you this time around. That's one of my fears, that it happens again.

Be firm in requesting your scan. I had an ectopic and a further 3 successful pregnancies and had no problems getting my early scan, but I've heard that's not the case for some ladies.

alexio · 24/03/2021 11:45

@mumsneedtochat both pregnancies were great. 1st pregnancy after ectopic has just turned 12 months and 2nd has just turned 2 days old.

It's a stressful time waiting to find out everything is okay but I'm sure things will be fine I was told it was a low risk of having another but you still need to get checked. Hope everything goes well Thanks

Borogroves · 24/03/2021 12:03

Congratulations on your pregnancy! Thanks

I've had two ectopics and been pregnant again after both. Each time I phoned the Early Pregnancy Unit and told them the situation and they booked me in for a scan. I think the Ectopic Pregnancy Trust recommends a scan at seven weeks if you've previously had an ectopic. If they are reluctant to scan you then insist.

Thanks for this. When did you phone the early pregnancy unit? Did you phone your doctor first? I'm only about 3 weeks. When would I call them?

Thank you :) x

I contacted the EPU directly both times as they had my records. I contacted them as soon as I found out I was pregnant. It would have been around five weeks as I never tested until I was a week late.

MrsB2019x · 24/03/2021 15:30

I had an ectopic in April last year and found out I was pregnant again in December. I called EPU directly when I was 4.5 weeks ish and they booked me in for a scan at 6 weeks. Everything was fine and I’m 19+5 now ☺️

I think some trusts are trying not to offer them due to Covid but it’s so, so important. Please be persistent if they initially try and fob you off!

Good luck ☺️

Thank you. I contacted them and I'm going for a scan tomorrow just to make sure everything is ok. Thanks for all your replies. :)

I had an ectopic rupture in March 2020. I’m now pregnant again. I called my GP and told them my consultant had advised I should have a 6 week scan with any future pregnancy (which she did). GP referred me, I had the scan 6+2. It’s a twin pregnancy, all in the right place. I’m now 9 weeks. Nobody questioned whether it was necessary or tried to fight me on it.

How did the scan go OP?

mumsneedtochat · 27/03/2021 20:40

@Lililou

How did the scan go OP?
Thank you so much for checking up on me. I went for the scan on thursday and they couldn't see anything just as I maybe thought. Took my hcg level and it was 140. They have checked it again today and I'll hear back on Monday for the results. If it has doubled or went up, they think it's an early pregnancy just. If it hasn't then I've possibly miscarried. Expecting the worse so I won't be disappointed but probably will be either way.

Keep up posted, whatever the outcome there's a great support network on here ♥️

mumsneedtochat · 28/03/2021 21:41

Update -

Just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone who had replied to me on here.

Unfortunately it was confirmed today that I have had what they call a chemical pregnancy.

I am so utterly heartbroken to be here again but I have hope for the future.

Thank you all.

Good luck, op. It's so sad, grant yourself some time to grieve and mull it over. Sending a big hug, miscarriages no matter how early are a loss xx

Lililou · 30/03/2021 20:37

Oh I'm sorry @mumsneedtochat, that's so sad to hear. 💐 How are you coping with the news?

mumsneedtochat · 30/03/2021 20:47

Oh I'm sorry *@mumsneedtochat*, that's so sad to hear. 💐 How are you coping with the news?
I'm so devastated. One minute I feel fine and normal again and the next I can't stop thinking about it. Can't seem to shift it from my mind. I'll be going about doing ordinary things and then all of a sudden see something pregnancy related and feel like I'm a million pieces again. It's so difficult it really is.

Just longing for something that I can't grasp and it's heartbreaking.

Lililou · 30/03/2021 21:39

A loss is still a loss, no matter how far along you were. They're real to you when you get that BFP and it's hard to come to terms with it not going how you'd wanted or expected.

Look after yourself like you'd look after a loved one. It's good to talk, on here and/or to friends and family.

MrsB2019x · 30/03/2021 22:03

@mumsneedtochat I am so sorry 💙 be gentle to yourself xx
