Hey Ladies

I am freaking out. I had an abdominal X-ray whilst pregnant (around 3w 4d)!

I’ve read sooo many bad things!!! Please can you tell me any positive stories of people who had X-rays during early pregnancy and it didn’t effect their babies?

Should I be worried or am I over reacting?

:( thanks

You're very very likely over-reacting. A single X-ray tends to give equivalent of a few days' worth of background radiation.

I really wouldn't worry about a single x-ray. I broke 4 ribs and lacerated my.liver before finding out I was pregnant. I had every painkiller under the sun, multiple CT scans, X rays as well as general anestheasitic to pin and plate my ribs.

When I was about 10 weeks pregnant.I had a further x-ray on my ribs to.check how they were healing and I was told that it wouldn't harm the baby.

I also had a number of dental x-rays later on. Baby is now a very boisterous 2.5yr old.

@Peanut91 did you have the multiple CT scans and X-rays whilst pregnant (if so how far gone were you) or was that before you fell pregnant and then @ 10w preg had the X-ray to check how it was healing? X

Yes I was pregnant but was unaware that I was. I was about 3 weeks at the time and the hospital made me POAS which came up negative which is why they went ahead (although they did say given my injuries that even it had been positive they would have still recommended the scans etc.).

At 3 weeks pregnant the embryo probably hadn't even implanted onto the uterus, and will have been microscopic in size. Absolutely not an issue.

@Peanut91 thanks so much. Glad your baby is healthy and you’re now all OK.
I am honestly so terrified... Googling really doesn’t help but I couldnt help myself. But thanks for taking the time to put my mind @ ease!

Anyone else have any positive X-ray stories?

Hi radiographer here! The chances of an X-ray beam coming into contact with such a tiny embryo are minuscule so I wouldn't worry.

I actually had a pelvic X-ray before I realised I was pregnant, basically the beam was centred over my uterus. An abdominal X-ray is centred higher up, around the belly button so even less risk.

Many women have X-rays without realising they are pregnant & go on to have healthy pregnancies. In the olden days before ultrasound they used to use X-rays to evaluate the foetus!

Misswhoshallnotbenamed · 13/04/2021 17:53

@JackJack84 hello! Thanks so much for taking your time to post on here! Oh wow! How far gone were you when you had the pelvic X-ray? Was your DC healthy and happy when born? It’s much more reassuring to hear real life stories then to hear a doctor just say “it’s low risk” so thanks for sharing your story!

@Misswhoshallnotbenamed I know this is an old post but how did thing turn out for you and pregnancy ?
I am in similar position (or worse)
I had a head CT scan at 3 /4 weeks pregnant. Worried sick

Mamabananananana · 30/04/2022 17:16

I had a chest xray and a weird chest scan whicg involved radioactive dye being injected into me, when i was 13 weeks odd.
babys fine.

Pregnantandvworried · 30/04/2022 18:07

@Mamabananananana thanks for your reply. Good to hear your baby is fine.
From what I've read ,the most risky to be exposed to radiations is between 2 and 8 weeks pregnant 😞

AlwaysSeekingComfort · 30/04/2022 19:18

Hi @Pregnantandvworried, unfortunately I had a missed misscarriage @ 10 weeks :( … however I’ll never know whether it was because of the X-ray or not. Sending you hugs xx

Pregnantandvworried · 30/04/2022 21:04

@AlwaysSeekingComfort I am really sorry to hear this. Sending you warm hugs. Did you have any ultrasounds before the 10th week ? Xxx

AlwaysSeekingComfort · 01/05/2022 06:07

Thank you @Pregnantandvworried. yes I had one @ 7w and one @ 9w @ WTTW. Xx
