Headaches at 18 wks pg

I'm 18 wks pg with second child, been having really bad headaches since about 10 wks - I went to the doctors three weeks ago and was told that they're perfectly normal and should start getting better soon, which they did about two weeks ago, but now they're back. Is this something I should be worried about/see GP or midwife about?

Hi Piccalli. Just wanted to say that I get loads of headaches in pg too . As far as I know, high blood pressure can be a cause but that has never been my problem. I just have to suffer!!! Drink lots of water, try using 4head and remember that you can take paracetamol. But obviously if you are really concerned then speak to pharmacist or GP again.
Hope you feel better soon....

Not nice at all. If they are hormonal in cause you may find they stop as you move into the second trimester. Keeping well hydrated and eating regularly to stabilise your blood sugar may help - it's easy to let these things slide if you are also having morning sickness. Hope they go away soon.

Thanks feedmenow - does 4head work then? I'm a bit reluctant to keep taking paracetomol as the headaches are pretty constant and have been for a while.

Headheartorhormones - that's what I thought too but I'm 5 weeks into the second trimester and it's not getting any better.

I'm also suffering with bad headaches and have just been diagnosed as suffering with migraines which I have never had before.

The headaches started after a wee bout of high blood pressure and haven't really got better since. Just trying to cope with it.

HeadHeartorHormones · 08/11/2007 17:48

Sorry - didn't read it properly - you're almost halfway and thats a long time to be feeling rotten. Poor you. Mine were definitely hormonal migraine, which it sounds like yours aren't. Hope someone else has some ideas. I expect the doctor told you it was normal to try and reassure you - and while knowing it is nothing sinister is helpful it doesn't really help you deal with the headaches does it? No harm in going back or seeing a different GP/Midwife if available. After all they haven't got better as promised have they? Is it the severity or frequency that is the main problem (or both)?

Hi Picca

I had bad headaches too between 18-20 weeks and had a very rude midwife ask me what precisely I thought she could do if I had a headache....well, maybe check my blood pressure?! So she reluctantly took my bp, told me it was fine and told me to go to the doctor if they continued!

Anyway, they did eventually go and I think it was just hormones - make sure you drink lots of water, and if you've recently turned on your heating I also find that sometimes gives me headaches too?

Piccalilli2 · 08/11/2007 18:31

HHoH it's both really - they're only really bad once a week or so but they are pretty constant, also I'm a bit worried if I'm having headaches all the time, how do I know the difference between an OK headache and a headache I should be worried about iyswim.

Thanks everyone for responses - I guess it's just one of those things and I'll have to try and get on with it til I next see midwife.

I had headaches too. But only the second time.

I had headaches most of my second pregnancy, Dr couldn't give anything and when I tried to by forehead from chemist they told me I couldn't use it but recommended cool and soothe strips which stick on your head. They did help a little. If your bloood pressure is okay I wouldn't worry.

Piccalilli2 · 11/11/2007 09:13

No idea what my blood pressure is, the midwife didn't take it last time I saw her and anyway that was 5 weeks ago! Normally my blood pressure is quite high though.

Slinkymelinki · 11/11/2007 09:46

Hmm I had headaches too until about 20 weeks when they climaxed with an almighty vomit fest! I found drinking tons of water (iced cold cos tepid made me sick too) and going for a brisk walk helped.
