Just what I said, really, 37 weeks now and wondering whether I should start sitting on a towel on our beautiful and very impractical linen sofa Bought, needless to say, before marriage was on the cards, never mind babies!!!

They just mysteriously vanished!

mejon · 08/11/2007 15:49

In bed at 1.45am on the Wednesday morning - just a trickle really. DH just turned over and went back to sleep. Contractions didn't start until 10am on Thursday and dd born at 19.11 that evening.

debinaustria · 08/11/2007 16:36

with ds1 I got up out of bed for a wee, then stood up and it was trickling down my leg , I caught some and showed it to dh to see what he thought!!
Ds2, the MW broke my waters in Hospital and I covered her and alsp managed to splash the TV on the opposite wall.

phdlifeneedsanewlife · 08/11/2007 16:45

well first there was a little splash in bed, and we thought, hmm, guess that's the waters breaking.

phoned the mw who said, "get some sleep".

lay down again, only to hear/feel a "pop" - dashed to the bathroom and jumped in the bath in time for an absolute GUSH. dh arrived and we stood there watching it POUR out. think, a bath tap on full, none of this 'wet myself' nonsense.

After 10hrs of labour it was STILL splashing out with every contraction!

Baby number 1 - in theatre whewn having an emergency section. Loads i fit so soaked the trainee and flooded the floor.

Baby number 2 - in the delivery room, on the bed. No idea what had happened. DH went running to get a midwife saying "there is something coming out of my wife!!"

Baby number 3 - on the bed about 7 minutes before he was born.

Niecie · 08/11/2007 16:52

DS1 - When I was sat on the toilet, just before getting picked up by my mum to go to Toys R Us to buy some cot linen. Shame I couldn't have waited half an hour then they could have gone in the shop and I might have got loads of free stuff. Labour didn't start for aout 8 hours. He was born next day on his due date.

DS2 - 30 seconds before we called an ambulance as we were still at home, getting ready to go to hospital, 20 minutes before he was born! He was 6 days early.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 08/11/2007 16:52

DD1 - kitchen floor whilst cooking dinner
DS1 - in the birthing pool during labour
DD2 - kitchen floor whilst cooking dinner (it's a girl thing...!)

Might be repeating earlier advice, but I would consider putting a plastic builders sheet, Pampers dry-nite etc between your sheet & the mattress in case they break during night - it seems quite a common time for waters to break.

Good luck!

GreenGlassGoblin · 08/11/2007 16:55

in hospital the night before I had DS. Marked the start of labour for me. Vile midwife wouldn't believe that I hadn't just wet the bed as I didn't hear a 'pop' first. Only pinky-clear wee ever then, with sudden incontinence thrown in...

fuzzywuzzy · 08/11/2007 16:55

dd1- in bed at night time the night before I was due in for an induction.

dd2- they had to break my waters during labour as I was stuck at something like 3cm and not budging......

doggiesayswoof · 08/11/2007 16:58

On my (brand new) bedroom carpet as I was on my way to the loo in the middle of the night. Huge gush with no warning at all. I waddled v fast to the bathroom and the tiled floor got most of it luckily.

Proper labour didn't start for another 20 hours or so.

blousy · 08/11/2007 17:14

1st time they just trickled out, had to stand on a newspaper & pack my hosp bag (hadn't packed and was 6 days late !
2nd time they went with a huge gush all over dh's feet (wearing brand new Timberland's!!).

GodzillasBumcheek · 08/11/2007 17:18

At the side of my bed (which i had just got out of) at midnight.
At the side of my bed (which i had just got out of, again) at 6.30am.

In bed in hospital (induced). I was able to get to the loo though before it went all over the floor. What I didn't realise was that once they've gone they don't really stop and that caught me out trying to get back to the ward...

daisynova · 08/11/2007 17:43

Brilliant, if somewhat disturbing, thread. I am hoping that I will go in the hospital as DH would hate to clean up after me!! He gets very squeamish!

Dinosaur · 09/11/2007 10:57

listen, if it happens in hospital, he will be paddling around on the hospital floor in it - one of my male friends always tells dads-to-be to wear old trainers to the hospital, for precisely this reason!

wotsits · 09/11/2007 11:04

With DD felt/heard a 'pop' while in bed, rushed to loo, and huge gush came out. We'd watched a DVD of the Royle Family Christmas special the night before so DH did a Jim Royle and said "are you sure it's not just a big piss?"

glad for this thread, although a little worried at pouring out in bath. Just picked up some puppy pads to put on sofa/bed/car in preparation, I'm squeamish never mind DH for cleaning these things- although I'm sure a couple of gross nappies later I'll get over that!!

Martha200 · 09/11/2007 16:32

Woke up in the morning, about 7am to the feeling I was wetting myself... stood up and realised, no I didn't lose control in my sleep and so then sat on the toilet for what seemed a complete age!!

The mattress protector helped, but I still made a mess on the way to the bathroom as it was a real gush.

chunkypudding · 09/11/2007 16:36

so when did everyone start putting stuff underneath themselves to be on the safe side if waters broke then?

and what is the best thing to use???

asking cos we're moving house soon (hopefully) floors are fine as all stone or wood but have a lovely new memory foam matress waiting there for when we move in, would hate to gush all over it - is it true that it rots upholstery???

Dp hoping they'll go all over our sofa as he wants an excuse to buy a new one

chunkypudding · 09/11/2007 16:36

ps am 32+ 1

claireybraxtonhicks · 09/11/2007 17:40

I had just got back in bed after going for a wee and heard a pop followed by a tinkling noise then felt it start to come out. Went back to bathroom but it wasn't really a huge gush, more a steady trickle although enough to soak a maternity pad in minutes. Worst part for me was being able to feel it coming out-very wierd sensation!
Contractions started 15 mins later

CorrieDale · 09/11/2007 17:46

They broke while I was on the loo, which was very convenient. What was less so was that they continued to gush out every quarter of an hour or so - and I do mean 'gush'. I had four changes of clothing that day before eventually realising that what was required was a skirt.

bubblepop · 09/11/2007 17:57

ds1&ds2-the hospital broke them
dd1-all over the car seat outside the hospital
dd2-started trikling at home, then the rest in the birth pool at hospital during labour
