Baby movements - shaking in womb?

Hi all

Silly question (I have text my midwife waiting for her to get back) but I've noticed the last week or so that baby is having shaking episodes once or twice a day.

They are definitely not hiccups, kicks or rolls it's a full on shaking episode which makes my whole belly shake for 3-5 seconds. It's like a seizure is the only way I can accurately describe it.

Never experienced this with my first, anyone experienced this or know if it's normal or not?? Almost 38 weeks with second baby x

No experience of this but wondering is it perhaps baby jerking awake and flailing a bit? Or is it more prolonged than that type of shake? Try not to worry although I know it's hard. Hope midwife comes back to you soon but chase if she doesn't.

I wouldn’t wait for midwife but would call triage instead to get some advice. Hopefully nothing but just in case I would call them

So hard to explain, never experienced this before!

You know them vibrating exercise plates you get, it's almost as if I'm standing on of of them for 5 seconds (obvs just my tummy vibrating not my whole body). So strange!

I feel really silly the thought of calling the hospital, I wouldn't hesitate if it was reduced movements but you never hear of anything like this. x

I'm really in two minds I just feel so silly that they'll think I'm a bit ridiculous x

Sorry just saw you said 3-5 seconds so may be them just jerking awake but anything movements wise that is unusual or new for your baby, then you're right to contact the midwife.

Bybbyeblackbird · 22/03/2021 14:45

That does sound strange. Don't feel silly - as pp said call triage/your maternity unit.

Newmum279 · 22/03/2021 14:50

Hi, I’m currently 30 weeks and have experienced this same thing 2 or 3 times over the past few weeks. It’s such a strange sensation! I’d be interested to know what your midwife says, if you don’t mind sharing.

AnxiousAnnie86 · 22/03/2021 14:51

@beckyyl so I would still check with midwife as I can't say it's the same as what I had! But I used to get it allll the time! And when my DD was born she did this thing where she would like shake her hands in a vibrating way! We used to call them her jazz hands 😂😂

Metallicalover · 22/03/2021 14:54

Advice is any change in movements/increased or reduced movements call the pregnancy assessment unit so don't feel silly calling the hospital! Xx

scpips · 22/03/2021 15:00

Please please don't feel you are being silly. When I had concerns, and felt I was being silly, they said the same thing, they would much rather you phone and it is nothing, than you not phoning.

beckyyl · 22/03/2021 15:33

Thanks everyone! Midwife didn't get back to me so I called delivery explained everything and said I felt so silly calling but they want me up there for monitoring so off we go! X

My son did this all the time. The vibrating was so much that people at work could see it happening when I was in meetings. Was v odd. Hope all is OK x

BertieBotts · 22/03/2021 20:49

Would be very interested to hear what they think it is! Hope everything goes OK with monitoring.

BertieBotts · 22/03/2021 20:50

I bet it will stop as soon as you get there :o they always do that, little buggers!

GrumpyHoonMain · 22/03/2021 20:51

Don’t leave until they find out what’s causing it. For my DS that wasn’t a good sign - but he didn’t start doing this until labour so they just got him out. Honestly at 38 weeks if in doubt I’d be asking for an induction.

edgeware · 22/03/2021 20:54

I had this with my first. I think it is either moro reflex in womb or the vibrate-y lip tremble they do when feeding sometimes. It really freaked me out too but it was nothing.

beckyyl · 22/03/2021 22:49

Thanks everyone. They've kept me in for the night with an emergency scan tomorrow and monitoring overnight as his heart rate is going up very high constantly x

So glad you called the hospital.

Hope baby settles.

GarnOut · 22/03/2021 23:23

So glad you went to get checked out. It’s never the wrong thing to do. Hope baby calms down soon.

AntiHop · 22/03/2021 23:26

Let us know how you are op. I'm also 38 weeks and I've had these kind of movements for a few weeks now. I hadn't thought anything of it. I had a 36 week scan and all was well.

Yep that’s what happened with DS too, but you’re in the right place.

Go and speak to your labour ward. 9/10 it’s nothing but sometimes, like with my DS, it can mean they might be struggling. They will monitor for you.
star1459 · 23/03/2021 00:34

I remember these and asking my midwife the same thinking I was being silly for asking. I even remember using the words like a fit/seizure

Apparently it's some nerve reflex to do with development

But either way, it's good you got it checked out. Always better to ask these things and be seen.

beckyyl · 23/03/2021 04:56

Thank you! 🥰 I felt so so silly calling and never expected them to monitor me let alone keep me in.
Babys heart rate has a baseline of 180-200 every CTG so far so emergency scan tomorrow and then decide wether to get him out earlier or not. But ultimately I'm so glad you all told me to call and check it out so thank you Xx
